If you awoke this morning to the sound of millions of anime fans crying out in anguish, it is because MAPPA has finally made it official: the Yuri!!! on Ice movie has been cancelled. Nearly eight years after the anime aired and after seven years in development, the prequel film that would have breathed new life into the series, Yuri!!! on Ice: Ice Adolescence, has been taken from us.

Yuri!!! on Ice: Ice Adolescence was first announced back in 2017, less than a year after the series became a huge hit. We still don’t know many of the plot details, but it was clear that something was wrong with the production process pretty early on. MAPPA originally set a release window for 2019 but admitted that the project had grown larger than their original expectations and would need to be pushed back. It never got another release window and this morning they posted an official cancellation on the Yuri!!! on Ice social media accounts and website.

It is heartbreaking but not unexpected news: between shows like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen, MAPPA’s animation teams were already stretched thin. As more time passed since Yuri!!! on Ice first aired, the movie was likely to be released to a public that barely remembered it. While we’re never going to get over Ice Adolescence being canceled, the reality of the business decision behind it isn’t lost on us.

If you haven’t watched Yuri!!! on Ice and are wondering what everyone is so upset about, you can stream the show on Crunchyroll. It features beautiful animation, shockingly accurate portrayals of men’s figure skating, and one of the sweetest romances in recent anime history. The anime became so popular that Olympic figure skaters used the music as part of their routine in 2018. It remains one of the best sports anime of all time so the fact that we’ll probably never get more of it is devastating.

So, if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to go sing History Maker at the top of our lungs until we feel better. It may take a while.
