To me, my X-Men!

X-Men '97 has finally been unveiled by Marvel Studios/Animation with a retro-feeling first trailer full of nostalgia, and we also have a release date which is much nearer than we'd anticipated.

Disney+ is getting a much-needed boost of big IP energy in early 2024 with animated shows like Star Wars: The Bad Batch and X-Men '97 before the heavy hitters arrive. The latter is a direct sequel to the beloved X-Men animated series from the '90s, so fan expectations are rather high after the first-look trailer. That said, when should older Marvel diehards be prepared for its long-anticipated premiere?

The animated X-Men many of us grew up with will return on March 20. It's a surprisingly short wait after months of silence and much speculation regarding Marvel Studios' 2024 release calendar, and we're thankful for it.

X-Men '97 is expected to have two seasons, with season 1 starting next month and the second one currently in development. The number of episodes that will be available to stream on March 20 is unknown at the moment.

Though the original cartoon was a network TV series that aired on Fox, the sequel series was created as a Disney+ exclusive. It remains to be seen whether additional network runs or even a physical release will happen later down the line.

What is X-Men '97 about?

Most plot details are being kept under wraps, but the new series directly continues the original storyline, which ended with Professor X saying his goodbyes to the team and a rather conflicted Magneto before departing Earth with Lilandra to stay under Shi'ar care (the only way he could survive a fatal condition).

This new volume of episodes still takes place in the 1990s as the title indicates, and of course, both new and old threats need to be taken care of. More importantly, the first trailer teases potentially big changes for the X-Men, such as Magneto seemingly taking over the team and as well as the X-Mansion. Will they be able to work out their differences for the greater good?
