Few shows have had as many lives as The X-Files. The iconic supernatural conspiracy show has returned from the ashes of cancelation for two limited series and a reunion film – and that isn’t including the feature film that was released while the show was initially on the air. However, original series creator Chris Carter says he could be tempted back for more – but only under certain conditions.
Speaking to Popverse at the opening of his first contemporary art exhibition, Carter explained what he thinks the future of The X-Files looks like. “David [Duchovny] and Gillian [Anderson] at the same time wanting to do it. I get that right now that it doesn’t look like that – Gillian, she’s up and running with so many amazing things, as is David. But I would want to do it with my same crew that made the show what it is. I think that would be a serious discussion.”
While he’s right that luring Duchovny and Anderson back to the roles for what would be the fourth time seems unlikely, he is at least open to the idea of getting the band back together. The band, in this case, seems to include the people behind the scenes as well as the on-screen talent, which is good to see. It takes dozens of people, from writers to directors to post-production crew, to bring a show like The X-Files to life.
The other option, of course, is to reboot the show entirely with a different creative team putting their stamp on it, which is what is in the works with the Ryan Coogler-led reboot that Carter revealed in March 2023.
