Cartooning giant Will Eisner's graphic novel A Contract with God and Other Tenement Stories was originally published in 1978 and went on to have a huge influence on comics history. Now, it looks like it may have a go at influencing Broadway history, as TEG+ has acquired the stage rights to adapt it, Variety announced earlier today in an exclusive.

This stage production will feature new and original songs written by Jewish musicians and composers including Sam Hollander, Lisa Loeb, Matisyahu, Ryan Miller, and Jill Sobule, with Hollander taking on the role as music producer.

TEG+ is a newly expanded version of the Tiwary Entertainment Group, founded by Vivek K. Tiwary (writer of The Fifth Beatle). The company will also be adapting The Fifth Beatle for television and has announced that they have acquired the stage rights to children's classic Harold and the Purple Crayon, with the intention of adapting it into a Broadway musical.

This will not be the first time a classic comic has been adapted for the musical stage. Comics fans will remember the musical adaptation of Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic memoir Fun Home, which debuted on Broadway in 2015 and went on to win five Tony awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

For those who are eagerly awaiting this theatrical production of Will Eisner's work, it is worth noting that the wheels of Broadway turn slow, and this production of A Contract with God has not yet secured a book writer.
