Upcoming new Star Wars movies, tv shows & cartoons: 2024 release dates and more

Learn all about the new and upcoming TV shows and movies in the Star Wars franchise for the next few years

Star Wars: The Acolyte

After a period of relative quiet, there’s a lot of activity in the Star Wars franchise again, with a live-action Star Wars prequel show called The Acolyte on Disney+, along with an armada of other live-action shows, cartoons, and even movies on the horizon... and in each case, they’re looking at the past, present, and future of a galaxy far, far away. One might even say that the Force is... awakening. (Too much? I'm sorry.)

After being a pop culture phenomenon in its original release, Star Wars kind of became a cult object for a decade or so, before returning with the prequels, fading back into (relative) obscurity for awhile longer, and then coming back again with the sequel trilogy.

All of which is worth considering as we head into yet another resurgence of the property with no less than four big screen movies announced for the next few years, as well as new series on Disney+ = like The Acolyte and the upcoming Skeleton Crew. Somehow, like Palpatine, Star Wars returns.

It’s been five years since Star Wars was last in theaters, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker being the final chapter of what’s become known as the Skywalker Saga; since then, Star Wars has aggressively moved onto the small screen, becoming the backbone of original content on Disney+ thanks to shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. (You can check out our guide to how to watch all of the available Star Wars, and how it all connects, right here.) As it turned out, many of those shows were building towards a new storyline that would take the franchise back to the big screen — as well as to all-new locations both literally (Ahsoka introduced an entirely separate galaxy!) and thematically. But that’s not all: new Disney+ series are already en route to take things even further, with additional movies in the works to do the same thing.

With so much new Star Wars underway, it’s almost overwhelming. For those who want to keep track of what’s coming up — or anyone who feels like they need a guide to what to look forward to in their favorite distant, war-torn fictional galaxy — don’t worry; that’s exactly why we’re here. Below, we’ll take you through the upcoming Star Wars shows and films, both those that we have a rough timeframe for, and those that are slightly further out. May the Force be with you… and may you know just what to expect about its multiple forms, as well.

Star Wars: The Acolyte

There’s a lot of Star Wars in the immediate future, even if specific dates for certain projects have yet to be released. (Disney+ tends to play its cards close to its chest in terms of premiere dates until a month or so before the actual event.) 2024 looks set to have no less than four, and perhaps as many as five, different Star Wars shows running — and that’s saying nothing about the three separate Star Wars movies that are currently in development for release in 2026 and 2027. Here’s an easy chart to keep track about the projects that we have rough dates for.

Leslye Headland, co-creator of Netflix’s Russian Doll, has created her own project which takes place 100 years before The Phantom Menace, and is described as a mystery thriller set during a booming and tranquil time of the galaxy. Headland has talked about wanting to examine the political, personal, and spiritual things that came up during the time period, as well as being curious just how a Sith lord could infiltrate the Senate without any Jedi detecting him. Running eight episodes, the show stars Amanda Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, and Dafne Keen, and runs now through July 16, 2024.

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy

Celebrating a quarter-century of collaboration, LEGO and Star Wars are embarking on their most ambitious project yet - a four-part series that undoes the entire Star Wars universe. After a total collapse of canon, it's up to young Sig Greebling to put the pieces back together (literally) while facing off against a host of warped Star Wars visions including, but not limited to, Darth Jar Jar.

Notably, the project was spearheaded by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem scribes Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit and features vocal talent such as SNL's Bobby Moynihan and someone named Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

Set during the post-reconstruction era following the events of Return of the Jedi in the same timeline as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, the new series has been created by Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts and screenwriter and producer Christopher Ford. At Star Wars Celebration in 2022, Watts described the show as “the story of a group of kids, about 10 years old, from a tiny little planet who accidentally get lost in the Star Wars galaxy. It's a story of their journey, and finding a way home." Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, and Kathleen Kennedy are also attached to the project as producers, with Jude Law the only announced cast member to date.

Star Wars: Andor, season two

Andor Season 1

The first season of Tony Gilroy’s critically acclaimed series focused on one year in the life of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), as he went from a cynical loner to a member of the Rebellion, thanks to the dual influences of Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård) and his adoptive mother, Maarva (Fiona Shaw); the second and final season will focus on a number of years as events ramp up to what audiences have already seen in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu

In mid-January 2024, it was officially revealed by Lucasfilm that the Mandalorian was transferring from the small screen to the big, with the announcement of The Mandalorian and Grogu — a new feature to be directed by series creator Jon Favreau. No release date was initially given, but Lucasfilm did say that it was intended to be shot later in 2024.

On April 5 2024, it was revealed that The Mandalorian and Grogu would be released May 22, 2026, meaning that it would be the first theatrically released Star Wars project since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Untitled Star Wars movies

There are, however, new films on the way. Revealed at the Star Wars Celebration Europe in 2023 were details of not one, but three upcoming movies that will expand the Star Wars Universe. The movies will be set in three distinct eras, with James Mangold directing a film about the very first Jedi, Dave Filoni directing a Mandalorian spinoff, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing a film about a new Jedi Order set after events in The Rise of Skywalker. Here's what we know about the officially announced upcoming Star Wars movies:

Dawn of the Jedi (working title)

Currently in development under the title “Dawn of the Jedi” — after its placement on the new Star Wars timeline unveiled at Star Wars Celebration Europe - will see director James Mangold and writer Beau Willimon, who'd previously worked on Andor, tell the story about the origins of the Force. What we know about the feature is that it's set 25,000 years before anything we’ve seen before, and that it will introduce the first Jedi, and investigate the origins of the Force itself. As Mangold said on stage at Star Wars Celebration Europe, “Where did the Force come from? When did we discover it? When did we know how to use it?” Those questions, and likely many more, will be addressed by this feature.

Untitled Dave Filoni project

If Mangold’s movie is shrouded in mystery, the same can be said — to an even greater degree — for Dave Filoni’s film. What we know is that it is, in theory, a spin-off from the Disney+ shows that he’s involved in, and a major event in the New Republic era of the Star Wars timeline… and beyond that, little else. Filoni teased in comments to Collider that the story will connect events in the Ahsoka series to events in the Mandalorian, and perhaps more, saying, “Things aren’t that great when we begin The Force Awakens.” So… will this be where we finally get to see the origins and rise of the First Order…?

Untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project

Set 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the movie from the Emmy-winning director will feature the Sequel Trilogy’s Rey in a lead role, with Daisy Ridley reprising the role. "I am so, so thrilled to be at the Celebration with all of you in London," Ridley told fans after being introduced at the Celebration, "I am very thrilled to be continuing this journey."

Fans have known about the Obaid-Chinoy project since October 2022, when it was reported that the Ms. Marvel director would be helming a new Star Wars feature, written by Lost and Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof. What would later be revealed was that Lindelof was just one of a team of writers attached to the project, co-writing the screenplay with newcomer Justin Britt-Gibson, and that the project was the first fruits of a writers room approach that had started in July 2022 and included Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville, Willow writer Rayna McClendon, and Briarpatch creator Andy Greenwald, as well as Dave Filoni. In late March, Lindelof departed the project, and was replaced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

We know that a screenplay exists, thanks to an aside in a recent interview with Ridley, so the real question is... how quickly will the movie get into production?

Release Dates: Potentially December 18 2026, and December 17 2027, both of which have been officially earmarked for Star Wars projects.

Movies & TV Shows with No Approximate Schedule Yet

In addition to the projects listed above, there’s a significant number of additional Star Wars stories in development without any dates attached. The following projects are all believed to be in some stage of active development at Lucasfilm currently.

Patty Jenkins's Rogue Squadron

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Set during the time of the Galactic Rebellion, the Rogue Squadron movie was first announced all the way back in 2021, along with its director, Wonder Woman's own Patty Jenkins. Then, some years went by, with few to no updates, and even the creative team considered the project to be on the back burner.

Recently, however, Jenkins confirmed that the Rogue Squadron movie was back on, saying her and Star Wars decision makers would "finish the deal" they struck nearly three years ago. Still, when that deal wiill come to fruition has not been announced.

Lando

Star Wars imagery

Lando Calrissian is undoubtedly one of the most charismatic scoundrels in the entire Star Wars universe, so it would make sense to create a show centered on the beloved former owner of the Millennium Falcon... and, perhaps, it makes just as much sense that what started as a TV series would end up as a movie. Justin Simien, the brilliant mind behind Dear White People, was developing an event series for Disney+ featuring the character spinning out of his appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but he's since been replaced by Donald and Stephen Glover, who have apparently transformed the project into a movie No other details have been released and nothing has yet been officially announced by Lucasfilm, so for now, this one is a fascinating curio to keep your eyes out for...

Platform: Theatrical

Untitled Rian Johnson trilogy

Rian Johnson

A month before The Last Jedi hit theaters, it was announced that the movie’s writer/director Rian Johnson would be creating his own Star Wars trilogy, entirely separate from the Skywalker Saga and involving all-new characters from a different corner of the galaxy that has never been explored. Johnson himself would write and direct the first installment, and his frequent collaborator, Ram Bergman, would produce. However, these films are currently on the back burner with Johnson busy developing more Knives Out movies for Netflix and working on future episodes of his acclaimed Peacock series Poker Face.

That doesn’t mean that he’s lost interest in Star Wars, though; in an October 2022 interview, he said that it’s “entirely a matter of scheduling,” adding that he “hopes” that the trilogy will come to fruition at some point.

Platform: Theatrical

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

In 2019, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told MTV News that the studio was "developing something" in the movie sphere to do with the Knights of the Old Republic video game. Soon afterwards, it was reported that Avatar screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis was working on the project which was the first in a potential trilogy of features. There has been no mention of the project since then, and Lucasfilm has never officially acknowledged that it was in development. Kalogridis has since created the Netflix series Altered Carbon, as well as written a screenplay for Gal Gadot's mooted Cleopatra movie.

Platform: Theatrical

Untitled Taika Waititi project

During the 2020 Disney Investor Day presentation, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that a Star Wars film from Taika Waititi that was in development. Though practically all information about the project remains unknown, in a May 2022 article in Vanity Fair, Kennedy revealed that screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Last Night in Soho, 1917) was assisting Waititi on the script. Midway through 2022, he admitted that he was “still trying to figure our what the story is." The current status of the project is unknown, but Waititi confirmed the project is still ruminating, telling Entertainment Tonight:

"At the moment, I'm still developing something with [Star Wars producers]. Like me, they have a lot of projects going on. I think they're gonna push it until I finish these other projects [...] I've got about four other scripts that I'm trying to finish. My thing is I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don't want to rush this movie."

This won’t be Waititi's first foray into Star Wars, as he directed Chapter 8: Redemption of The Mandalorian and voiced IG-11, the assassin droid.

Platform: Theatrical

Untitled Shawn Levy project

In November 2022, it was revealed that Free Guy and Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy was in talks to develop a Star Wars movie of his own. A month later, he told Collider, “I have this golden ticket into a galaxy far away, and I'm going to devote myself to developing a screenplay that gives me the privilege of making this movie. I don't attach to things because it looks good in a trade announcement. I attach to things that I intend to make.” He did, however, acknowledge that the project would be some time away, as Deadpool 3 remains his sole focus right now. (That movie is scheduled for a July 2024 release.)

Ahsoka Season 2

Star Wars: Ahsoka

The first season of the Dave Filoni-helmed series featuring the fan-favorite character both served as an ending and a rebirth for Ahsoka: she was left in a new galaxy with no immediately obvious route back to her home, alongside not only her friend Sabine Wren, but also the dark Jedi Baylan Skill and his apprentice Shin Hati. She’d come to terms with her relationship with Anakin Skywalker, and seemed filled with something approaching peace with her history. Lucasfilm has now confirmed that a second season of the show is in development, meaning that we’ll all get to see just what was going on with the filled-with-foreboding final scenes of that first season. What was Baylan up to?

Platform: Disney+

A Droid Story

The Star Wars franchise is also branching out into animation features beginning with A Droid Story, which will be developed by Lucasfilm Animation and Industrial Light & Magic and will premiere on Disney+. According to the official Star Wars Twitter account, the tale revolves around a new hero who sets out on a quest guided by legacy characters R2-D2 and C-3PO. No release date has been set.

Potentially Abandoned Projects

The Mandalorian Season 4

Even before the third season of the show had debuted on Disney+, show writer and creator Jon Favreau told CinemaBlend in an interview in 2022 that he was already writing the fourth season of the Disney+ show. With the announcement that Favreau will direct the big screen The Mandalorian and Grogu, it's unclear whether or not a fourth season of the show - which was never officially announced by Lucasfilm - will actually happen.

What is the next Star Wars series coming out?

As stated above, Disney+ doesn’t tend to give significant warning about which projects are about to drop ahead of time. Given previous reports and the expectation that Skeleton Crew might have debuted before the end of 2023, it would stand to reason that it would be next brand new series to debut on the service… but don’t take that as any kind of guarantee.

The next new Star Wars content in general to appear is almost certainly going to be the final episodes of the first season of Young Jedi Adventures; new episodes of the 25-episode first season have already been announced by Lucasfilm as debuting in early 2024.

Will there be a season 2 of Obi Wan Kenobi?

The six-episode Obi-Wan Kenobi series from 2022 was announced as a mini-series, but the reception from fans — and star Ewan McGregor’s eagerness to make more — have a lot of people wondering if it might be expanded into an ongoing series, or at least receive a sequel of some kind. Nothing has been officially announced by Lucasfilm, but given the openness to the idea from all primary participants, it feels as if it’s something that really should happen, if nothing else…

Is there going to be a Star Wars 10?

Technically, there have been 11 Star Wars movies already — 12, if you include the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars feature from 2008 — but this oft-asked question specifically refers to an “Episode 10,” following on from 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which was episode 9 in the Skywalker Saga. (Again, you might want to check out our watch order for all Star Wars to date.)

In that respect, an Episode 10 of sorts is in the works: it’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s upcoming feature focusing on Rey and the new Jedi Order. While not officially a new episode in The Skywalker Saga — that officially ended in 2019, after all — it’s a continuation of the series featuring familiar characters, and building on the Skywalker Saga’s storyline.

What are the new Star Wars movies in order?

While we don’t have official release dates for any of the new Star Wars features, it’s generally believed that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first to go into production, and the first to be released; everything beyond that would simply be conjecture at this point.

In terms of the official Star Wars timeline, things are much clearer; the order of the new movies is:

  • Untitled James Mangold project
  • The Mandalorian and Grogu
  • Untitled Dave Filoni project
  • Untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project
