Twilight director would cast Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega for current day Twilight
Hold on tight, spider monkey!
Who would be your fancast for a current day adapatation of Stephanie Meyer's hit vampire romance series Twilight? Mine would certainly have Anya Taylor Joy stuck somewhere on the vampire side and maybe Hailee Steinfeld as Bella. But who cares about my opinions anyway when Twilight film director Catherine Hardwicke has her own thoughts on who would play the central couple today.
Variety caught this tidbit on episode of the Watchalong podcast, Hardwicke told host Josh Horowitz that Saltburn's Jacob Elordi "probably would be Edward today." As for who would nab the role of Bella in this imaginary current production, Hardwicke responded that Jenna Ortega was "amazing."
Casting the teenage hearthrob role of the decade can be tricky though, Hardwicke continued. In hindsight, it seems obvious that both Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart would become stars - hindsight is 20/20 after all. However, during the casting process, the studio questioned whether or not Pattinson was handsome enough for the supernaturally handsome Edward Cullen.
Hardwicke described to Horowitz about the audition process at her house with Pattinson and Stewart. Though she felt like the performances worked in person, she needed to double check that the chemistry wasn't just in the room but on the screen as well. "I had to be sure," she said about the process, "Of course in person I got carried away, but you have to be sure it translates."
As for other fun tidbits that we found in the podcast, apparently Edward almost had long hair. Oh yeah, hair extensions and all. But apparently Pattinson hated them, so the production backed off. He also almost had a long peacoat. Sliding doors, man.
