Stories are always meant to end, so we’re not surprised that Prime Video’s The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has been working toward a climactic showdown between Butcher and Homelander. However, we weren’t ready for it to end so soon. With season four just a few days away from its debut, Kripke decided to spring on us that The Boys season five would be its last.

In a post on social media, Eric Kripke confirmed that the fifth season of The Boys would be its last on Amazon Prime, saying that “#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!” According to him, this was always his planned number of seasons, but he had to be “cagey” until he got approval to make the reveal.

Speaking to Variety, Kripke explained that he has known that season five would be the last since they began writing season three, but Amazon was, understandably reluctant to agree. After all, this is one of their biggest original shows so the temptation to keep it going as long as possible is understandably strong. Kripke went on to say that he wanted to make this announcement himself so that “everyone understands and they can go into season four understanding the bigger shape of the huge five-season story.”

Don’t worry too much about there being a Vought-shaped hole in your viewing schedule because Kripke also confirmed that there were “a couple” of spin-offs in the works beyond just Gen V, which is currently back in production following the tragic death of star Chance Perdomo, and The Boys Mexico spin-off. And we still have the epic conclusion as Butcher and Homelander finally have it out with each other, so there are years of diabolical fun ahead of us even after The Boys season five.
