Wake up, Bill Cipher: your time might be about to come again.
Ahead of this summer’s release of The Book of Bill — a retelling of the events of Gravity Falls from the perspective of extra-dimensional demon Bill Cipher, from series creator Alex Hirsch — a Disney executive is teasing the possibility of an on-screen revival for the cult animated series almost a decade after its final episode.
The series, which ran for two seasons initially on the Disney Channel before moving to Disney XD, followed two twins — Dipper (voiced by Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal) — as they spent their summer with their great-uncle Stan in the distinctly odd town of Gravity Falls, Oregon… a summer filled with adventure, mystery, spooky happenings, and by the show’s finale, the near-destruction of reality as we know it. Imagine The X-Files, if it were funny, anxious, and altogether cooler, basically. (Really, it’s a great show; it’s all on Disney+ right now and you should go watch if you haven’t seen it.)
In the years since the show’s completion, creator Hirsch has openly criticized the censorship he faced from Disney on the project, both in terms of censoring LGBTQIA+ content and sharing specific notes from Disney’s standards and practices department received during production. Apparently, his relationship with the company seems to be significantly better these days.
Talking to The Direct, Meredith Roberts — executive vice president of television animation and Disney branded television at the company — addressed the often-rumored idea of Gravity Falls returning to the screen in a way that sounded far more hopeful than many might have expected, saying, “You know, we’re in conversations with Alex. He’s about to publish a book with Disney on his project. And we also do some shorts. So never say never.”
This wouldn’t be the first time the show’s been revived since the final episode aired in February 2016; three Gravity Falls shorts have appeared since then, in 2017 and 2020. Each other those three shorts, however, have been gags rather than a full-on extension of the show’s lore, making any potential revival at this stage an even more exciting proposition. Not that the last short fans saw in 2020 wasn’t exciting in its own way, as you can see for yourself below.
For now, let’s all keep fingers crossed that conversations between Hirsch and Disney pan out, and that there’s a fourth journal out there leading to so much more Gravity Falls in our future…
