While we love the political intrigue and scheming, let’s be honest: a big reason we love Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is the giant dragons that show up to eat entire armies and burn cities to the ground. There were just a few dragons in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, but there are plenty more in its prequel show. Here is every dragon we see in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon to keep you glued to your screens this summer.

Drogon

Drogon is one of the first dragons that we see in Game of Thrones as he crawls out of Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre with his two brothers Rhaegal and Viserion. Over the course of the series, Drogon is the only of Daenerys’ dragons that survive, making the black dragon the last living dragon in existence in the Game of Thrones timeline.

Rhaegal

The second of Daenerys’ three dragon children is Rhaegal, who was named after her eldest brother and had green and bronze-colored scales. Though he was usually associated with Daenerys, Rhaegal was briefly ridden by Jon Snow at the Battle of Winterfell in the final season of Game of Thrones before being shot down and killed by the Greyjoy fleet. His death is what causes Daenerys to burn down King’s Landing.

Viserion

The final dragon from the Game of Thrones series is Viserion, who was both the first and second of Daenerys’ dragons to die. That is because Viserion was initially killed by the Night King and turned into a wight. He was the dragon that melted the Wall and allowed the dead to enter Westeros. Viserion died his second death at the Battle of Winterfell when Arya Stark killed the Night King and released his hold on the wights.

Syrax

Syrax is the first dragon we see in season one of House of the Dragon and she is used to introduce the concept of bonding as Rhaenyra Targaryen takes Syrax as her mount. There are a few visual differences to Syrax, such as her curved horns and her fan tail, that set her apart from the other dragons in the series.

Caraxes

Known as the Blood Wyrm, Caraxes is the mount of Daemon Targaryen and swiftly shows the immense power that dragons have in this setting. He plays a decisive role in the War for the Stepstones, burning many of the Targaryen’s enemies to the ground.

Seasmoke

The mount of Laenor Velaryon, Seasmoke doesn’t get much screentime in season one of House of the Dragon. When we do see him, he is smaller and nimbler than the larger dragons who participate in battle. After Laenor’s funeral, Seasmoke remains riderless.

Meleys

We only get two looks at Meleys, who is ridden by Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, which is a shame because her nickname implies that she would be a fearsome force in battle. The Red Queen carries Rhaenys to her son’s wedding and is seen bellowing in fury at the coronation of King Aegon II.

Vhagar

The oldest and largest dragon in existence during House of the Dragon, Vhagar has had multiple riders over the years. This includes Visenya Targaryen during Aegon’s Conquest over a century before the events of House of the Dragon. Despite being the oldest living dragon at the time, she is still strong enough to beat her younger kin in battle and is seen eating Arrax later in the series.

Vermax

Vermax is first shown as a young dragon who becomes bonded to Jacaerys Velaryon. We don’t see him again until the season one finale when Jacaerys is sent to Winterfell, riding Vermax along the way.

Dreamfyre

This is another dragon we only see briefly in House of the Dragon. Aemond Targaryen encounters Dreamfyre in the Dragonpit and is swiftly chased off by her fire. Helaena Targaryen is this dragon’s rider though she seldom takes her out.

Sunfyre

King Aegon II’s mount is one we barely get to see in the first season of House of the Dragon. His brilliantly colored scales are only visible in background shots so far.

Arrax

Arrax is only in House of the Dragon for a single episode and even then it is just to show how massive and powerful Vhagar truly is.

Vermithor

The Bronze Fury is only shown for a few moments in the final shots of House of the Dragon season one and is primarily there to tease the escalating conflict to come in season two. Before the events of the show, Vermithor was the mount of King Jaehaerys and has dwelled in the Dragonmount since the king’s passing. In the show, we see Daemon Targaryen approach Vermithor in hopes of bonding with him and riding him into battle.
