2023’s Blue Beetle movie is going to get the follow-up that fans have been asking for… but it’s not going to be a movie. Deadline is reporting that a Blue Beetle animated series is currently in development at DC, building off the movie but telling an all-new story.

The outlet reports that the screenwriter for the movie, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, and the movie’s director Angel Manuel Soto will serve as executive producers on the project, alongside the movie’s executive producer John Ricard; Galen Vaisman, who was an executive producer on the movie, will also be attached on behalf of DC Studios. The series, which will be co-produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, will have Miguel Puga will work as showrunner on the series, with Cristian Martinez also attached as writer.

It’s worth noting that DC and WBA declined to comment for the Deadline story, but also that DC Studios co-head James Gunn has already revealed that Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle inside the new DCU canon.

Another important point made in the Deadline story is that the new series isn’t intended to follow up on the dangling plot lines from the movie — that would primarily be the whereabouts of the missing Ted Kord — but instead, “create its own story which, in success, could potentially lead to a return to the big screen for the giant blue bug.”

One potential reason for moving away from pre-existing storylines…? Ted Kord might be in use elsewhere; remember, there’s a Booster Gold TV show that’s part of DC’s upcoming slate, and Booster and Ted are famously inseparable…

Expect more details about the series to be revealed in the coming months.
