It was a phone call that changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Charlie Cox thought it was just a prank call. After all, how many people get a voicemail from Kevin Feige inviting them to become a superhero again?
In 2018 Netflix cancelled Daredevil, and series lead Charlie Cox thought his time at Marvel was over. Time has proved him wrong. Since his return as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cox has gone on to reprise the role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Echo, and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.
Speaking to a crowd at Wales Comic Con 2023, Cox recalled the moment he was asked to suit up as Daredevil again, and how he had almost written it off as a prank call.
“I really thought that ship had sailed. I thought it was over. It had been a couple of years. What I didn’t know was that there was an embargo on that. There was an amount of time, I think it was probably two years, after the show was cancelled before Disney and Marvel could approach us. During that time, I didn’t know that. So, I just thought it was over. Vincent [D’Onofrio], who plays Wilson Fisk, he and I would chat occasionally on the phone, and he would kind of say, ‘I’m sure they’re going to bring us back.’ And I’d be on the phone being like, ‘The guy is delusional. He’s got to let it go,’” Cox recalled.
“I went out for a walk with my wife, and I came back, and I had a voicemail. It said, ‘My name is Michelle. I’m Kevin Feige’s assistant. Can you give us a call?’ It was one of those moments where you think it’s a prank call.”
Thankfully, Cox returned the call, otherwise things would have been pretty awkward. “On the phone call with Kevin he said, ‘I don’t know what we’re going to do with you specifically going forward, but we want to start with a little cameo in Spider-Man, and the little couple episodes of She-Hulk.’ It was so much fun. It was a nice easy way back in.”
This has led to Daredevil: Born Again, which is currently filming in New York. Not only has Daredevil returned to the Marvel Universe, but he’s leading a new series. That’s the kind of prank call I can get behind.
