C'mon, grab your friends: the Adventure Time universe is expanding, and Stephen Universe's creator is helping

Warner Bros. Animation is working on both a film and prequel TV series, the former featuring Rebecca Sugar's name in the credits

The original Adventure Time hasn't aired new episodes since 2018, but the folks at Warner Bros Animation clearly think there's more to learn from that universe. Case in point: today's news (from Variety) that Cartoon Network is putting together both a film and prequel series set in the Adventure Time universe. And to make sure the movie brings the magic, CN is enlisting one of the biggest names in animation - Rebecca Sugar, creator of Stephen Universe, is on payroll.

Sugar isn't the only ingredient to this cinematic recipe, of course; other big wigs in the animation world are onboard too. Patrick McHale, who co-created Over the Garden Wall, and Adam Muto, the showrunner of the original Adventure Time series, are attached as well. Beyond these (very exciting!) names, we don't know a ton about the Adventure Time film - plot details and production/release dates are still under wraps if they've been decided at all. We do know, however, that the movie will feature the dynamic duo of Jake the Dog and Finn the Human, according to a press release sent out by Cartoon Network June 12.

The Adventure Time prequel series, however, is shrouded in a little bit less mystery. Attached to the project is Nate Cash, a Spongebob Squarepants veteran, and the plot synopsis (from that press release) goes like this:

"Adventure Time: Side Quests takes the Adventure Time franchise back to the early days when Finn was just a kid, excited to fight monsters and go on epic quests with his best buddy Jake. In stand-alone episodes, our heroes take on classic Adventure Time villains like The Ice King and re-connect with stand-out side characters from the original series."

No release date for Adventure Time: Side Quests has been announced, but don't fret - you can stream all of Adventure Time (plus its spinoffs) right now on Max.

The Adventure Time cast were at Emerald City Comic Con this year - and Popverse premium members can watch the whole panel.

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy pairing of the two. He has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama, despite their better judgement. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kelsey, and corgi, Legs.
