Tron threequel Tron: Ares is finally in front of the cameras, and a renowned face from the realm of science fiction has joined the ensemble.

After reports saying that, following delays, Tron: Ares would start filming in early 2024, director Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) confirmed the news on Instagram last week. In 2023, the filmmaker briefly teased plot details: "A movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human."

Now, Deadline is revealing that X-Files legend Gillian Anderson (now perhaps better known for Netflix's The Crown and Sex Education) has joined the packed cast for the new Tron in a mystery role. She enters a roster that includes Jared Leto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. The script comes from Jesse Wigutow (he wrote one of the many drafts The Crow remake has gone through) and Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes).

Plans to bring back the Tron franchise have been on and off at Disney since 2010's Tron: Legacy performed decently with $400 million worldwide (its bloated $170 million budget was likely considered the bigger issue). While many questioned the quality of the script and some of the performances, it's hard to deny the movie has gained a cult following over the years, mostly because of its strong aesthetics and Daft Punk's killer soundtrack. Moreover, Legacy launched director Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Top Gun: Maverick) into the upper leagues of Hollywood.
