They’ve run into each other plenty of times in comic book form — and, likely even more often in kids’ bedrooms around the world for the past four decades — but coming soon in cinema screens is the toyetic clash fans have dreamed of, with Paramount Pictures announcing that a G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover movie is in the works at the studio.
No details about the movie were released at the Las Vegas movie industry event, which has been running all week, but the movie will mark the return to the big screen for the G.I. Joe franchise, which has been absent since 2021’s Snake Eyes, the third live-action outing for the property. Transformers has been far more successful as a movie series, with last year’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts being the seventh feature in the series, with at least two more in development beyond the newly announced crossover.
The Transformers and G.I. Joe properties — both owned by Hasbro — have been interacting since 1987’s G.I. Joe and the Transformers comic book series, published by Marvel. Currently, both are part of Skybound’s acclaimed Energon Universe, developed by Hasbro and Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, which reboots both fan-favorite properties in a shared universe setting that allows each to build off each other in addition to the all-new Void Rivals property.
We have no idea of when a Transformers/G.I. Joe movie will arrive in theaters, but one thing’s for sure: it can’t come soon enough.
