Get your hands on Colin Firth's surprisingly authentic looking notes from The King's Speech
They didn't need to make this so realistic... but we're glad they did
Often in movies, it is the small details that make the biggest difference. Does it matter if the flight console in Top Gun was accurate? Or that Gimli's axe in The Lord of The Rings is made of resin rather than metal? We watch movies to escape our reality, so we often cut movies some slack when it comes to props or action, but sometimes a movie goes the extra mile to create a realistic-looking prop even when it doesn’t need to.
Certainly, The King’s Speech didn’t need to put the time and effort into making the paper King George VI reads from look so authentic. It is barely shown on the screen and certainly not with enough detail to accurately read what it says. The audience is barely going to look at the pages, yet they put in the effort and created something that wouldn’t look out of place in a collection about the Royal Family, though you can add it to your film memorabilia collection if you’ve got the spare cash.
While this isn’t the piece of Colin Firth memorabilia we’d most like to get our hands on – that honor belongs to that white, open shirt from Pride and Prejudice – it is still a pretty cool piece of cinema history. It is that attention to detail that helps set The King’s Speech apart from other biopics and make it feel like you’re watching history come to life. You believe that you’re watching history come to life, which helps the actors fully transform into these historic figures.
