One of the hottest comics of the past few years is about to become one of the hottest movies at the multiplex — and, potentially, break new ground for some very familiar Heroes in a Half-Shell, with the announcement that Paramount is working on an adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin… and that it’s intended to have an R-rating.
Details about the project are mostly remaining under wraps, but TMNT: The Last Ronin was the best-selling western comic book in U.S. bookstores in 2023, with the first issue of the current sequel run hitting 140,000 orders. The series is set in an alternate future for the TMNT in which only one Turtle remains, and he is out for revenge against the man responsible for the death of his brothers… which is a tall order, considering that man controls not just the villainous Foot clan, but also New York City itself.

According to a report in the Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be written by Boy Kills World’s Tyler Burton Smith and produced by former DC Films chief Walter Hamada. The original comic book was co-written by TMNT creator Kevin Eastman with long-time collaborator Tom Waltz.
