Getting scares out of everyday objects and imagery is a delicate balance. It is easy to make it feel cheesy, like with the Stephen King film about killer trucks called Maximum Overdrive. However, when done well, the format can make us uneasy in our own homes, surrounded by potential objects of terror. Hopefully, the new horror film Tarot manages to steer clear of the cheese and deliver the fear when its release date finally arrives.
Not that schlocky horror can’t be fun – Sam Raimi has built a career on the stuff, after all – but Tarot feels like it is trying to deliver a more traditional horror experience. The premise takes Final Destination and mixes a bit of Ouija into it, which isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it can still be effective in the right hands. We’ll find out if the film can deliver something unique when Tarot comes out on May 3, 2024.
If you don’t make it to the cinema to catch Tarot, we know approximately when it will land on streaming services. Thanks to the deal that Sony has with both Netflix and Disney, we know that Netflix will have Tarot in its streaming library first, usually around 18 months after the movie debuts in cinemas. That would put Tarot landing on Netflix around November 2025. That same deal means that Tarot would end up on Disney+ a year-and-a-half after that around June 2026, provided you’re happy to wait that long to see it.
For those a bit more impatient to get stuck into the new horror film, Tarot will land in cinemas on May 3, 2024.
