Superman: Legacy finds the new onscreen Man of Steel and Lois Lane
David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been named as the new actors for the iconic roles
It’s would appear that we now have our new on-screen Superman and Lois Lane, with the Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit reporting that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have landed the roles for 2025’s Superman: Legacy and James Gunn confirming the report on twitter.
Both actors were named amongst the shortlist being screen tested for the roles this past week by writer/director/DC Studios co-head James Gunn. Corenswet has appeared in a number of television shows in recent years, most notably Ryan Murphy’s Netflix miniseries Hollywood and The Politician; he was also amongst the high-profile ensemble cast for HBO’s We Own This City, developed by The Wire’s David Simon in 2022. Horror fans might be more familiar with him through his appearance in A24’s Pearl, in which he played the projectionist.
Rachel Brosnahan, meanwhile, is most well known for her role as the title character in Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which recently completed its run on the streamer after five seasons. Additionally, she was part of the cast of the underrated atomic bomb drama Manhattan, as well as Netflix’s House of Cards — which Corenswet also made an appearance in, coincidentally enough.
Gunn had previously written on social media that the actors auditioning for these roles — which reportedly also included Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Dynevor, and Samara Weaving — were “among the best I’ve ever seen or worked with.”
Superman: Legacy will appear in theaters July 11, 2025, and will be the first movie project from DC Studios, the newly created studio overseeing all of DC’s movie and television projects; the title will be the first movie in the new DCU, but not the first project overall; that honor belongs to Creature Commandos, an animated series aimed at the Max streaming service.
For those curious; yes, Corenswet’s casting means that the unlikely tradition of Superman actors having previously auditioned for, and failing to get, the role has been broken.
