Return of Superman 30th anniversary special revealed at San Diego Comic Con 2023
At DC's Jim Lee & Friends panel, fans got to hear about the upcoming special celebration
At the Jim Lee & Friends panel during San Diego Comic Con 2023, DC Comics announced an upcomign anniversary special celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Return of Superman.
The event that brought Superman back form the dead, the Return of Superman also continued the combined efforts of the Superman team at the time, who were creating the three simultaneous Superman titles DC was running. A lot of those same names were announced to be returning for the anniversary comic.
Dan Jurgens, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, and Karl Kesel were announced to be writing the comic, with Jurgens and Brett Breeding on art. Variant covers for the book will be by Brad Walker and Jon Bogdanove.
Per the panel, the story will focus on the four characters that briefly took over for Superman during his time being "dead:" Steel, Superboy, the Eradicator, and Cyborg Superman. However, the special will not send them back to the time of Supes's death, but catch up with them in the present of the DC continuity.
"I think that Superman has more relevance now than he has in a long time," said Jurgen on the subject.
The room was abuzz with excitement for the prject, some of it coming directly from the person moderating the panel. "When I think of Superman," said Jim Lee to the attending creators, "I think of your Superman- not just the way that you drew him but the way that you wrote him."
The Return of Superman 30th anniversary special has no release date as of this writing.
