That Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse shocking cliffhanger ending wasn't written until midway through production

Across the Spider-Verse star Shameik Moore didn’t know how his movie would end when he began recording it.

If the ending to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left you wondering what was going to happen next, then you’re not the only one. According to the film’s star, when he was given the script for the 2023 movie, an ending hadn’t been written yet.

Speaking at a spotlight panel at Megacon 2024, Miles Morales voice actor Shameik Moore discussed the approach writers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham took with the film’s script. When a fan asked Moore what his reaction was when he read the script and saw the ending, the actor revealed the ending wasn’t even part of his original script.

“They didn’t have a completed script for me to read,” Moore says. “They work in a way where they have ideas, they refine the ideas, and we build a movie from the beginning until it’s done. And when it’s done, then they’ll put it out.”

While this might bother some actors, Moore loved the malleable nature of the film, and embraced the unpredictability of it. “I like the flow of consciousness. They’re like, ‘Shameik, we’re going to change these lines.’ There is no point in learning lines. I learn my lines ten minutes before. I’m not really a play guy. My style is rooted and grounded, so it takes finding that person inside of me, so I’m not acting anymore.”

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the next chapter of the Spider-Verse saga. It was originally set to be released in 2024, but the 2023 Hollywood strikes have likely delayed it until 2025.
