New York Comic Con this year was full of huge news from the anime industry, but one of the more surprising announcements was that we were getting an anime adaptation of Satoshi Mizukami’s fantasy manga Sengoku Youko. The anime is due to air as part of the Winter 2024 anime season, with a release date that is fast approaching.

Crunchyroll will stream the anime as it airs on Japanese stations. The first episode of Sengoku Youko is due to air on 10 January 2024 and will run for three cours (seasons) across the year. This will give it plenty of episodes to cover the first two arcs of the manga, called the World Reform Siblings Arc and the Thousand Demons Chaos Arc.

Sengoku Youko takes place in a world divided into two factions – humans and monsters called katawara. Tama is a katawara who wants to protect humans while her brother, Jinka, is a human who hates humans. The pair are joined by a cowardly swordsman named Shinsuke who is on a quest to discover how to be strong. Together, they will uncover a plot to transform humans into monsters and battle entire armies to stop it. The trailer introduces us to all these characters and showcases the beautiful animation we can expect from the anime.

The anime adaptation is directed by Mashiro Aizawa at animation studio WHITE FOX, who are best known for their work on the Steins;Gate, Re:Zero, and Akame ga Kill! anime. Sengoku Youko will run over three seasons, though a specific episode count hasn’t been announced yet. We would expect there to be at least 34 episodes released across the three cours.
