Our Flag Means Death's Rhys Darby advises fans on how to get a selfie with Bigfoot
At this year's NYCC, actor Rhys Darby delivered a showstopping address about getting a selfie with Bigfoot
At this year's New York Comic Con, Popverse interviewer extraordinaire Veronica Valencia shared the stage with a group of actors who had gathered, as Nathan Foad said, "a propos of nothing" to play the Newlywed Game. Valencia offered the group—which also included Con O’Neill, Vigo Ortiz, Kristian Nairn, Matthew Maher and Rhys Darby—whiteboards upon which to share their answers as to who amongst them would be most likely to do different things.
For instance, Ortiz was voted most likely to enjoy the outdoors; Nairn to order the most expensive thing on the menu; and, according to Foad, Maher would be most likely to survive the zombie apocalypse: “I think you’d be the best at sort of weaseling your way; you’d side with the bad guys, good guys, bad guys.”
“I lack a core,” Maher prompted. “Yes,” agreed Foad.
But perhaps the most jaw-dropping moment in the game occurred when Valencia asked the question, “Who would be most likely to get a selfie with Bigfoot?”
What follows is as close a transcript of Darby’s answer as could be gotten amongst the waves of laughter that it caused:
“Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, or the Old Nasty as they know him in Siberia, are strictly elusive creatures. So you need to be military-trained, really, to know how to get close to them, and by that I mean being able to track and being able to live in their environments for up to 3 or 4 months before they can come near you. Because they can smell you miles away. So in order to get a 'selfie' with one of these giant creatures — Gigantopithicus, which is what I believe they are from an evolutionary pattern - one must I think live in the environment for up to 6 months, and then progress slowly to get them to feel safe with you, and I think that can take a while."
He continued, "I think personally I could do with it, because I have an affiliation with primates from my experience with the silverbacks in Rwanda. So I think once I got in, I would just be at one with the primate that we all have nestled inside of us. You know, these creatures are like humans, but they’re more innocent. War isn’t a thing for them. I think I would slowly reveal a camera, but very slowly, making sure they realize it’s not something that is going to be an issue, camouflage it, and then I would just snap a selfie probably from a distance as well, I just don’t want to be too worrying for the Sasquatch and their young ones, as well.”
“So I would get in and I would take a photo and that’s all, just the photographic evidence and I’d walk away.”
