Sometimes, happily ever after has some pit stops along the way — even for royal romances.

While Casey McQusiton’s original novel version of Red, White & Royal Blue brought the story to a close — there’s even an extended edition to prove it! — the movie version, which became a fan favorite after debuting on Prime Video in August 2023, isn’t quite done with Alex and Henry just yet. A sequel has just been announced, giving eager audiences a second shot at transatlantic love.

Plot details for the as-yet-untitled movie are currently being kept under wraps, but Matthew López, who co-wrote and directed the original movie, is returning to co-write this new installment… with none other than Casey McQuiston themself, interestingly enough. Should fans consider this the book sequel that never happened? We can but hope. (McQuiston will also act as executive producer for the sequel.)

Although it’s currently unknown whether or not he’ll direct this second outing, López will produce the movie, alongside returning producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Schechter Films, and Michael McGrath from Amazon MGM Studios. Perhaps most importantly, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are both onboard to return as Henry and Alex, respectively.

The original movie was a big deal when it debuted in 2023, prompting “a huge surge in new Prime membership signups” in its first week, according to Amazon; the movie also vaulted into the top three most-watched romantic comedies of all-time on the streamer in that first week alone, Amazon revealed, making the fact that a sequel is on the way somewhat less surprising — but still impressive, considering the rising star status of both of its leading men. (You are all watching Showtime’s Mary & George, right…?)

The sequel was announced during a screening of the movie at California’s Culver Theater Thursday evening; more details are likely to emerge during Prime Video’s upfronts presentations next week.
