There are dozens of isekai anime out there, with more set to hit our screens in the upcoming anime season. The anime adaptation of the Re: Monster manga, which itself is an adaptation of the light novel series, is coming in just a few weeks, bringing a more gruesome twist on the standard isekai formula.

Similar to That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Re: Monster follows Kanata as he suffers an untimely death only to be reborn in a fantasy world as a lowly goblin. However, he manages to make the most of this strange situation thanks to his ability to eat other monsters to gain their powers. Kanata’s new life begins soon when Re: Monster season one releases on April 2, 2024.

Rather than try to build a new world for himself and other monsters like Rimuru in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Kanata, in his new goblin body named Gob-Rou, is more focused on simple survival. There is a strict magical hierarchy in place in Re: Monster, with goblins occupying the lowest tier. Gob-Rou has to use all of his knowledge from his old life to not be devoured by a more powerful monster.

Already the trailer shows more blood and violence than we typically see in an isekai anime, though that doesn’t always translate into quality. It does, however, help Re: Monster stand out in an increasingly crowded genre.

Re: Monster’s first episode will premiere on Crunchyroll on April 2, 2024, with new episodes to follow weekly.
