Oni Press quietly moves into turnaround mode
The Oregon-based publisher is looking to add a marketing co-ordinator, according to an online posting
After a period of significant contraction — with many staff members, including two co-owners of the company (as well as a number of other senior figures), pushed out of the company — Oregon-based publisher Oni Press is, seemingly, staffing up once again.
A job listing for the position of Marketing Coordinator has appeared on LinkedIn, advertising the position as one that will “work closely with the marketing team on a variety of tasks including content development and execution for Oni’s social channels, coordinating with digital vendors on title metadata, creator care and communication, asset development, and marketing campaign planning and analysis.”
Amongst the duties required for the role are maintaining Oni’s social media calendar and scheduling social media posts across platforms for the publishing, identifying new opportunities for creators on social platforms, promoting Oni’s backlist content on social media, and working on everything from customer inquiries to working the Oni table at comic book conventions. Skills required for the position including knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Facebook Business Manager, and Canva, as well as “excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.”
As it turns out, the Marketing Coordinator posting was just the first to be advertised; on Oni's own website, in addition to that position, there's also an opening for a full-time graphic designer at the company, with a "primary focus on designing comic books, trade paperbacks, graphic novels, logos, promotional materials, merchandise, social media graphics, and more." Both positions are open for submissions at [email protected], according to the Oni site.
The listings represent one of the first signs that Oni is growing after a summer that saw essentially the entire upper management for the company removed, either via dismissal by its majority owner Polarity LTD, or through resignation. Earlier this year, an Oni Press employee described the sentiment amongst remaining employees as “demoralized.” Last month, Popverse reported that the company had enlisted the help of an external company to find a new president/publisher.
It had been believed that, as of the end of this summer, Oni Press was essentially being managed through the Polarity offices in St. Louis, Missouri.
