When people think of One Piece, they usually think of massive fights, dramatic transformations, and some classic Shonen adventures in friendship and heartbreak. However, they should also pay respect to the food of One Piece. After all, no crew can sail on an empty stomach and Sanji puts a lot of effort into keeping the Straw Hats fed and looked after. That’s why Sanji deserved his own spin-off manga, which is getting a physical English-language release this spring.
The manga, titled One Piece: Shokugeki no Sanji, puts the spotlight firmly on the Straw Hats’ fiery chef in a series of six one-shot adventures. These non-canon stories take place throughout the One Piece story, with chapters set before Sanji joins the Straw Hats through to their time in Wano Country. They’re all fun, low-stakes stories that never threaten the status quo while still feeling substantial.
A word of warning, though – don’t read One Piece: Shokugeki no Sanji on an empty stomach. The illustrations and descriptions of food in these pages are tauntingly good, as expected from Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki, the duo behind the hit manga series Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma. Each of the six chapters highlights different cooking techniques and exquisitely drawn pictures of food. We know that anime food is always delicious looking but this is a bit ridiculous.
If you’re the impatient type and want to read One Piece: Shokugeki no Sanji right away, all six chapters are available with a subscription to the Shonen Jump app. However, we’re excited to get a physical copy in our hands when the manga finally gets an official English release on March 12, 2024 in the US and April 25, 2024 in the UK.
