You can buy Nicole Kidman's sparkly AMC suit... if you have $5,000 to $10,000
Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place likе this.
"We come to Sothebys... for magic." Wait. That's not right. We go to AMC (standing itself in for all movie theaters) for magic! At least that's what Nicole Kidman says at least in her painfully sincere and inadvertently hilarious "AMC Theaters. We Make Movies Better" ad that played before many a movie as folks began to return to in-person cinema viewing after the pandemic shutdown.
The commercial, with it's strange dramatic tones and soothing Kidman monologue, became an internet sensation, launching itself to parodies of all sort (including on SNL) and becoming a big Halloween costume of 2023. Those who were searching for the right suit for their Halloween costumes, would have found that the original suit was sold out.
But what was that about Sothebys and magic? Well, Sothebys auction house may not get us to laugh, to cry, to care like AMC does, but it does give those with a bit of (let's be honest, a whole lot of) pocket change to buy a piece of cinematic history. Those who keep their eye on these things know that Sothebys, alongside Picassos and fine jewelery, has sold at auction Star Wars props, Michael Jordan's Air Jordans, and James Bond's Aston Martin. Now - there's a brand new piece of cinema history on sale - Nicole Kidman's sparkly grey wool and cashmere Michael Kors suit from AMC's commercial.
How much will this piece of movie history go for? The estimate right now sits at $5,000-$10,000, but, in this fair writer's opinion, I wouldn't be surprised if it went for more at this point. This Nicole Kidman-worn suit is part of an exhibition curated by designer Thom Browne called Visions of America. So, for those who don't have the money to fork over to buy it, you should be able to catch a glimpse of it at Sotheby's while the exibition is open to the public from January 12-19. The auctions for the exhibit will run from January 19-29.
