New Warner Bros. Discovery boss says that DC is "top of the list" in terms of priorities for the new company
There is a new 10 year plan in place for DC movies, says CEO David Zaslav.
Amid rumors of cutbacks and layoffs, Thursday afternoon’s Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 earnings call proved to be light on specific information about practical plans for DC, HBO Max, and other Warner Brother Discovery companies — but it did offer a surprising clue about how important DC is to the company's future.
“DC is top of the list for us,” said CEO David Zaslav, saying that the new executive leadership team at Warner Bros. Discovery has “done a reset” in the way that the company is approaching DC overall. On the movie side, he said, there will be a 10-year plan that was likened to how Disney has approached planning for Marvel Studios, with former Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn leading the way as part of the new team in place at DC.
Responding in particular to the cancelation of the Batgirl project in particular, Zaslav argued that there was “no economic case to make expensive movies to go direct to streaming,” adding that “we’re not gonna put a movie out unless we believe in it.” This statement suggests that, previously, features might have been rushed in order to meet pre-existing release dates as opposed to being fully "ready."
Zaslav specifically mentioned Black Adam, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and Flash as three upcoming DC movies that the company believes in, adding that if anything, he wants to make them better before release, though he did not specify how. He also specifically named Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman as recognizable global brands, describing DC and its characters as a particular priority of WBD moving forward.
“The objective is to grow the DC brand, grow the DC characters, but just as importantly is to protect the DC brand,” Zaslav promised.
More information about specific plans for Warner Bros. Discovery will be held back until an Investor Day later this year, the company said during the call. Popverse will, of course, keep you up to date with everything that happens, as it happens.
