The wait ends this week!
Nearly two decades after the debut of the animated series that started it all, Netflix is bringing Avatar: The Last Airbender into the live-action medium, and they've recruited an impressive cast to help them do it.
Before we dive into who's playing who and where they come from, here's the official synopsis shared by Netflix: "The four nations of the world once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world."
As you can see, this new live-action take on the modern animated classic won't deviate far from the story fans know and love.
Who is in the Avatar: The Last Airbender cast?
Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender has a good mix of renowned names and younger faces who seem like a good fit for their respective parts. While we've yet to see how everyone fares when the series is released, we're hopeful about the new iterations of TLA's many fan-favorite characters. Below you can find the main cast and who they play.
- Gordon Cormier (The Stand) as Aang
- Kiawentiio (Anne with an E) as Katara
- Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why) as Sokka
- Dallas Liu (Players) as Prince Zuko
- Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (The Mandalorian) as Uncle Iroh
- Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) as Fire Lord Ozai
- Ken Leung (Industry) as Commander Zhao
- Tamlyn Tomita (Star Trek: Picard) as Yukari
- Elizabeth Yu (May December) as Azula
- Yvonne Chapman (Kung Fu) as Kyoshi
- Maria Zhang (WorkInProgress) as Suki
- James Sie (Stillwater) as the famous 'cabbage merchant'
- Casey Camp-Horinek (Reservation Dogs) as Gran Gran
As you can see, Netflix has been quite transparent so far about the series' cast, but given the scope of the story (which is adapting the anime's entire first season), we'll be learning about more actors in the coming weeks and when the entirety of season 1 finally drops on February 22.
Netflix has renewed Avatar: The Last Airbender for season 2! While you wait, check out our watch order for newcomers, an exclusive Avatar reunion panel from ECCC 2024, and a couple recommendations on what to watch after the series. Heck, we've even interviewed some of the best Avatar cosplayers from across the four nations - why not check it out?
