What is peanut butter without jelly? Laurel without Hardy? Deadpool without plenty of F-Bombs sprinkled throughout his dialogue? Yes, we’ve known that Deadpool & Wolverine would be rated R for a long time now, but it wasn’t until the movie got its official rating that we knew exactly why.

In their bulletin released on June 5, 2024, the MPA gave a rundown of the latest films that have received an official rating from the organization. Among them was Deadpool & Wolverine, which was given an R rating for “strong bloody violence and language throughout” as well as “gore and sexual references,” which puts it very much on par with the previous two Deadpool films. As though their bizarrely sexual popcorn bucket didn't give it away.

What is unusual is that this is the first R-rated film to be officially a part of the wider MCU. Previously, films in the long-running franchise have all been strictly PG-13 affairs, which allow for limited violence and language. Integrating the Deadpool series, which has thrived in the R-rated territory for two movies already, could open up the door to future R-rated MCU projects. Notably, a movie like Blade, which has been stuck in development for years now, seems ripe for more adult language and violence.

With the 2023 Hollywood strikes forcing studios to shift around their schedules, Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the biggest releases coming this summer, meaning that Disney is going to be pinning a lot of their box office hopes on it to save them from what many think will be a dire cinema season. Its R rating will definitely limit how many people can go see it, but it is still expected to be one of the bigger hits this year.
