Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, no longer has a release date, but there's an upside
Well, an upside if you're into kaiju flicks (or giant gorillas), that is
Bong Joon-ho's long-anticipated sci-fi movie Mickey 17 no longer has a release date, but another big Warner Bros. release will take over its slot.
The next movie from the director of Parasite has gone from a March 29, 2024, release to being unscheduled entirely, as Warner Bros. is likely looking to give it a big awards push. Variety's sources, however, also say the delay will give the filmmakers enough time "to finish the project," as it had been affected by "various production shifts" and last year's writers and actors strikes.
This doesn't mean Warner's big tentpole roster for next spring and the early summer season is suddenly feeling weak, as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is being brought forward from its previous April 12 slot to occupy the open space left by Mickey 17 on March 29. Incidentally, this may give the new MonsterVerse installment a big Easter push in many markets right after Dune: Part Two's expected rule over the March box office.
Warners are likely to then keep the money coming in with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24, unless Disney and 20th Century Studios' Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (now dated for May 10) is too big of a rival for the much-anticipated prequel.
So far, we've barely seen or learned anything about Mickey 17 besides the featured picture above, which shows Robert Pattinson's character waking up inside a mysterious chamber. The synopsis available online reads as follows: "Mickey 17 is an expendable, a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact." The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
