Emma Roberts has joined the ensemble cast of Madame Web, Deadline reports.

Sony Pictures' Madame Webb film is slated for release in 2023 and will star Dakota Johnson and other cast members including Sydney Sweeney (Sharp Objects, The Handmaid's Tale), Celeste O'Connor (Selah and the Spades), Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight, Dora and the Lost City of Gold), and Tahar Rahim (A Prophet, The Serpent). The film will be directed by S.J. Clarkson (Anatomy of a Scandal, EastEnders), with Matt Sazama (Morbius, Lost in Space) and Burk Sharpless (Morbius, Lost in Space) as screenwriters (Kerem Sanga wrote an earlier draft).

Emma Roberts has just finished filming a romantic comedy titled About Fate (currently in post-production), but she is probably better known for her role as Chanel Oberlin in Scream Queens and in multiple roles over multiple seasons of American Horror Story.

In Marvel Comics, Madame Web is a supporting character in Spider-Man's world, where she is a precognitive mutant who is connected to a life support system that looks like a spider's web. The original Madame Web is an elderly woman, but because the character will be played by Dakota Johnson, we can assume that the Madame Web of the film will be Julia Carpenter, the second Madame Web, who takes on the powers and title of the original before the original dies.

As of now, it has not been announced what role Emma Roberts will be playing in this Madame Web film.
