Mace Windu, Lando Calrissian, more unite for Star Wars' Black History Month covers by Mateus Manhanini
Mateus Manhanini's portraits will run on ten Star Wars comics this February
Marvel has announced a new element of its Black History Month celebrations by unveiling some of Mateus Manhanini’s beautiful variant covers for its Star Wars line to be published throughout the month of February.
Each of the ten covers will spotlight significant Black characters throughout the Star Wars franchise, from the movie series’ Lando Calrissian, Mace Windu, and Finn, to characters who have made their debuts in Marvel’s own Star Wars comics, such as Sana Starros, and Imperial officer Lt. Haydenn.
“When we asked Mateus if he’d be interested in designing a set of covers to showcase these great characters, we were delighted to find out he’s a big Star Wars fan and his love for the franchise really showed,” Star Wars group editor Mark Paniccia said of working with the artist currently known for his Wakanda covers. “What he came back with is exciting, elegant and powerful.”
Talking to StarWars.com about the covers, Manhanini said, “I hope that these covers manage to remember and reaffirm the presence of these Black characters within the Star Wars universe and about the importance of their stories being told. The more diversity we have, the more richness, power, and solidity this universe will have, and this will influence the life and experience of many readers.”
