Re-Live the Marvel Studios panel at SDCC '22 Hall H
Popverse brings you live coverage from the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H
This is the big one – the triumphant return of Marvel Studios to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con for a Saturday evening bacchanalia of treailers, announcements, cast appearances, musical performances, and even the live-action debut of a major MCU villain here amongst us fans.
Marvel Studios' Hall H panel begins with sizzle reel of footage from previous movies, with a Stan Lee voiceover saying that Marvel has always been a reflection of the world outside the window. Captions talk about it being a long time, and that things have been difficult. "But today is our time to come together again," it says. Crowd is CHEERING.
Ms. Marvel footage gets a big cheer. She-Hulk footage. Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Falcon & Winter Soldier, Wandavision. It's clips of everything we've seen in the last year.
The Marvel logo comes up and everyone is going insane.
Miss Minutes from Loki has shown up on the many big screens to tell us that we've made it here "to the Comic-Con panel at the end of time."
Here's Kevin Feige, who gets an amazing response from the crowd. "Hall H!" he says, and people are thrilled.
"I'm unbelievably excited" to be here, says Feige. "There were times I wondered, was that it?"
Feige says that, when he was last on stage at Comic-Con, they announced MCU Phase 4, and almost all of that has been released by now. Talks about the many new characters introduced in the MCU since then.
"Now, believe it or not, we're approaching the end of Phase 4." Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the end of Phase 4. This phase was about "resetting the MCU." But he wants to talk about the future.
Marvel Studios' Phase 5
"What in the heck is Phase 5?" Feige asks. Ant-Man and and Wasp: Quantummania launches it, then Secret Invasion on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 follows, then Echo, in production right now, as are The Marvels and Loki season 2. Blade will start filming in October. Ironheart follows, Agatha: Coven of Chaos in Winter 23/24, then Captain America: New World Order. The last thing in Phase 5 is an 18-episode first season of Daredevil Born Again.
Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onfrio will return.
End of Phase 5 will be Thunderbolts, Feige just officially announced.
Marvel Studios' She-Hulk
Tatiana Maslaney is "so excited," calls the Hall H crowd overwhelming. "This show is very different," it has irreverent humor.
Ginger Gonzaga plays Nikki Ramos, who's a "ride or die friend" for Jen Walters. She likes to encourage risk-taking for Jen.
Jameela Jamil talks about what makes Titania tick. "I'd say jealousy and a desperate need for attention." "She's extremely annoying, and I drew that from myself. You're welcome!"
Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth will cameo, Wong will also appear. The aim of the show is intending to create something action packed, funny, and "filled with Marvel cameos."
"I think this is Marvel's first half-hour TV comedy" says showrunner Jessica Gao, suggesting that we're going to see cameos from characters we expect to see in serious situations. Tatiana introduces a new trailer for the show.
Trailer shows Smart Hulk testing out She-Hulk. "Who's your best friend? Spandex! Spandex is your best friend," he says. Lots of smashing, as you'd expect. Also: Jen is breaking the fourth wall!
Jen is working as the public face of a law firm dealing with superhuman law, and representing the Abomination.
At least on the Hall H screens, the animation/CGI for Jen is far better than in the earlier trailers.
The tiny post-credit tease in the trailer looked very like Daredevil. Just saying.
Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion
We're done with She-Hulk, Feige is now teasing something darker, something gritty. He's introducing Secret Invasion, and Cobie Smulders is on stage to talk about it.
Smudlers is clearly thrilled to be back in Hall H.
"This is a darker show, you guys," Smulders says, calling the show an exciting thriller where you won't ever know who people are. Are they skrulls? Are they humans?
"I'm living the dream, you guys," Smulders says, calling Samuel L. Jackson "the greatest human." Olivia Coleman, Ben Mendelsohn are also mentioned for the cast, and also praised.
A Hall H exclusive right now: footage.
"For years, you've been avoiding Earth," says Maria Hill. She's talking to a grizzled Nick Fury. Ben Mendlelson is there too. Olivia Coleman is saying that they're in no shape for the fight ahead of them, and that it's just the beginning. Explosions, screaming skrulls, and a lot more in a fast-cut trailer. Fury says that he's the last man standing between the skrulls and what they really want. "And what is that?" he's asked... and we see the logo.
Marvel Studios' Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania
Now Feige is talking about Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania. Here's Peyton Reed on stage, and he's happily saying that he's been coming from Comic-Con since 1994. He's brought Kathryn Newton with him (Cassie Lang), as well as Evangeline Lilly, who's clearly happy to be here. Oh, and a guy called Paul Rudd, too.
Reed says it's "no big deal at all" to kick off Phase 5. "We finally get to spend some time in the Quantum Realm." There will be a lot of new characters, and the Quantum Realm isn't what we think it is.
Rudd says that Scott is pretty pleased with himself "and his role in saving the universe" when the movie starts. "He's been kind of cooling out, he's been busy at work-ish, and I don't know what else I'm supposed to say!"
Lilly says that it's fun to see Hope Van Dyne onscreen in the suit again, and get to explore her vulnerabilities and fragilities. "Being a powerful woman is only impressive if you do it against very difficult odds, right?"
Newton says that Cassie is becoming who she's supposed to be. She doesn't want to say anything to spoil anything. "I want to see it, can we see it?" Reed said that they brought exclusive footage just for people in Hall H.
Scott Lang is reading from his (over-written) memoir in a bookstore. "Look out for the little guy," he tells a rapt audience of kids, and then his ex-wife calls. Cassie is "trying to do something that matters," she says in front of Hank and Janet Van Dyne, who aren't impressed by what Scott did in Endgame. A voiceover says that time isn't what we think. "It's not a straight line." Bill Murray is in the Quantum Realm, and he knows Janet, somehow. The voiceover tells Scott he knows how his life ends. Who is the voiceover coming from? It's Kang.
And now Jonathan Majors have come out on stage, officially introduced as "Kang the Conqueror."
"He Who Remains" is a "different variant" from Kang. Majors says, "there will be conquering" when asked to explain the difference between the two.
Peyton Reed confirms, "there may have been a bit of MODOK" in the sizzle reel.
Feige says there's a reason Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania kicks off Phase 5: it's Jonathan Majors as Kang.
Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn has come onstage to talk Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.
It was exactly 10 years ago this week that Gunn flew to North Carolina to pitch the first Guardians to Kevin Feige. "It's been a good ten years," says Feige. "I fell in love with this characters, they're not really superheroes," says Gunn. When he pitched the first movie, he knew where he was going, and Vol. 3 "is the end of that story." The audience groans sadly. "It doesn't mean everybody dies."
Here's some footage.
Gamora is now the leader of the Ravagers, much to the seeming surprise of Peter Quill. "So you really don't remember anything? About your time with us?" asks Quill. "No," says Gamora. The soundtrack this time is "Do You Realize" by the Flaming Lips, because we're suddenly in the 2000s, musicwise. Scenes of the Guardians on Earth, and also things looking bad for Rocket. Adam Warlock showed up, to cheers. The story seems to have something to do with Rocket's origin, and we got to see a very cute young raccoon.
Chris Pratt is here! Karen Gillan is here! Pom Klementieff is here! Sean Gunn! Will Poulter is here!
Gunn said that Vol. 3 is the end of the story arc started in the first movie. "When I first talked about doing Guardians of the Galaxy, I was like, I don't know, it looks a little goofy," but then he started thinking about what makes them real. "What makes [Rocket] real? I realized, if we was real, he'd be the saddest creature in the universe."
Chris Pratt seems moved by being the trailer for the first time; he tells Gunn that he loves him. Talks about Vol. 3 revealing that Peter's hurt over losing Gamora opens the Guardians up to danger.
Gillan also says that she's trying not to cry after watching the trailer. This time, Nebula might even get to be funny. "She had a very cathartic experience with Thanos being eliminated from her life," she says. She'll still be a little mean, however.
Klementieff is also telling Gunn that she loves him. "It's very, whoof! What a journey," she says. "I have to talk about Mantis, right?" Mantis is still weird, but more confident and unapologetic, and might even show some fighting skills in Vol. 3.
Sean Gunn says that the most rewarding part of making the Guardians trilogy "has been working with my brother. That's the honest-to-God truth. It expands over the course of three movies," however; it's also the joy of working with everyone else on the movies. "You can see it, we're legitimately choked up watching what we did. It's because we care."
"It's the most beautiful thing to be able to work on something creatively where your colleagues are all on the same page," Sean Gunn says. He's also crying! This is a very emotional part of the panel.
James Gunn says that people have been asking about Adam Warlock since the beginning. He calls Will Poulter as the only person who could play the role. He says he's a huge admirer of the first two movies, but was welcomed into the family. "They're every bit as nice as they are talented."
Maria Bakalova is playing Cosmo the Space Dog in the new film. "I think you'll love Cosmo. She brings heart and maybe strength," she says.
James Gunn is introducing the High Evolutionary, who's walking amongst the crowd and taking selfies with fans, while trying to look as dramatic as possible. "High Evolutionary, it's another mile," Gunn says, trying to rush him on stage.
"Call me sire," says the High Evolutionary. "I am pleased to be here. As I gaze out at this crowd, I am reminded of my sole purpose of the universe: to take unevolved, lowlife scum, such as yourselves, and enhance you genetically into something less reprehensible." Now we have some clues about Rocket's origins, then.
Wifi dropped out, but the High Evolutionary was played by Peacemaker's Chukwudi Iwuji.
Marvel Studios' Phase 6
Feige asks if we'd look ahead to Phase 6. Confirmed Fantastic Four for that Phase.
Talks about the two last films for Phase 6. Footage time. It's a logo: Avengers The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The crowd went INSANE for those title reveals. "Those last two films will complete the second saga for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is, of course, the Multiverse Saga," says Feige. We're all being given hats that say The Multiverse Saga.
They're teasing something more. "We've talked about the past, we've talked about the future, now it's time to talk about forever," says Feige. It's a Black Panther: Wakanda Forever musical performance, of all things.
Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
I lack the ability to appropriately describe this (amazing) performance, which is simply a man singing and being accompanied on drum. But it's stunning.
The crowd is as enthused by this performance as anything else that's happened during the panel. And now Ryan Coogler is onstage.
Coogler thanks the performers, saying, "It's gonna be hard to follow that up, but we'll try."
"It's been five years since I was here," Coogler says, referring to when they shared the first footage from Black Panther. Mentions Chadwick Boseman, and the audience applauds and cheers.
"The cast, include Chad, hadn't seen the footage yet." He was excited, and grabbed Coogler by the shoulder. "He was getting excited as the clip went on, and he was squeezing down on my shoulder. When it was done, I couldn't even lift my arm."
"Chad is no longer with us physically, but his spirit, his pride, and the impact he had on this industry will be felt forever." Wakanda Forever has action, humor, and goes to new places in the MCU we've never seen before.
Lupita Nyong'o says it's monumental to be back in Wakanda. "We get to see more. That's all I'm going to say." Leitita Wright says it's a blessing to return, and "to honor Big Bro at the same time."
Danai Gurira says that it's everything to see the influence of Black Panther in the world. "It's everything" to be back, adds Florence Kasumba. Winston Duke says that he's filled with gratitude to be standing alongside his "chosen family" to work on a project made with "so much love."
Also on stage is the amazing Michaela Coel, who says that standing on Hall H is the first moment she can process making the movie. She saw Black Panther three or four times. "There's something very unique that the movie does to the audience. I think it has something to do with a Black superhero padded out by a Black cast." She describes the experience as an honor.
Dominique Thorne makes her debut as Ironheart in Wakanda Forever. "The impact that Black Panther had on the world was indescribable, but most of all, spiritual," she says. "It's a gift, and I'm reminded of that standing here in front of all of you. It is an honor."
Tenoch Huerta talks about the importance of inclusion, now that he's on Hall H. "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for inclusion. And look at us, here!"
Coogler says, "We brought something for you guys today." It's the trailer!
The trailer is a very understated one, but shows Namor and the Atlanteans in full glory. Wakanda is apparently under attack, while Angela Bassett's Queen is furious about having lost her entire family. As the trailer continues, it speeds up, and ends as we see the Dora Milaje attack the Atlanteans.
Lots of hugs on stage between the cast, we seem genuinely moved by the trailer. "That's the show, guys," says Kevin Feige. "I look forward to seeing you next year!"
And that is it - except that they're now playing the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer again, stopping the crowd in their tracks.
