"Let's create it": Dwayne Johnson suggests that a Marvel/DC crossover on the big screen could happen

What if Black Adam ushers in a new era of the DC cinematic universe that includes Marvel? Such a thing might not be entirely impossible, says the actor

It’s apparently not just the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe that’s going to change now that Dwayne Johnson has joined the DC family with the upcoming release of Black Adam — the star (and producer) of the upcoming movie also seems to be opening the door for a potential multiversal (and multi-company) crossover, as well.

At Wednesday’s red carpet premiere of Black Adam in New York, Johnson was asked about the possibility of a crossover between DC and Marvel’s cinematic universes — and he didn’t shut the idea down entirely.

“Well, I’m always optimistic. I’d like to think that we would see that,” Johnson told Variety. “My philosophy is anything can get done. Let’s start with the end goal. And if the end goal is to have some sort of crossover that can be compelling, smart, cool for the fans. Let’s get a temperature gauge if they’d like to see something like that. And then if they do, then let’s create it. I operate my businesses like that. I truly believe that anything can happen. Anything can happen with the right people and place, and the right leadership, having the right conversations.”

Even though Black Adam is a DC movie, and one that features no small number of cameos from pre-existing DC characters, as well as the much-hyped cinematic debut of the Justice Society characters, Variety’s question wasn’t the only time that Johnson faced questions about Marvel, including the Associated Press asking if he was looking to “take a bite out of Marvel” with the new project.

“As we build out the DC Universe, ushering in this new era of the DC Universe, that to me is not my lead foot, is not my goal, to take a bite out of Marvel. What they’ve done is incredible, what Kevin Feige has done is incredible,” he said in response. “And I love those guys, they’re all my friends, and they are largely responsible for the economic drive of our business for almost two decades. We don’t want to be Marvel. We want to be DC. And now we do things.”

Trying to make peace and compliment Marvel and smoothing a path to a future collaboration… Maybe this really will end up being a new era for DC movies after all.

Black Adam hits theaters October 21.
