Turns out, lots of people wanted to see Loki season 2, according to Disney

The second season premiere was the second most-watched season premiere on the platform in 2023, apparently

Turns out, people really wanted to see what’s happening in the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse.

According to a press release from the Walt Disney Company, the debut of the second season of Marvel Studios Loki was the second most-viewed season premiere this year on Disney+, with 10.9 million views after just three days on the service. (For the record, Disney defines “views” by the total stream time divided by the runtime of the content viewed; therefore, it doesn’t necessarily translate into individual viewers; if one person rewound and watched the episode over and over and over again, each go-through would count as one view.)

That 10.9 million number means that Loki outperformed shows like Secret Invasion, Star Wars: Ahsoka, and American Born Chinese… but not the third season of The Mandalorian, which retains the title of most-watched season premiere from back in March. (Disney, perhaps curiously, didn’t release a viewing number for that show.)

Loki’s second season premiere was a much-hyped event that promised to further the multiverse/Kang storyline for the first time since this February’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania movie; that storyline is intended as the connective tissue for the next couple of years’ worth of Marvel releases, in the same way that Thanos proved to bring the MCU together ahead of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The season had actually been the focus of the post-credit sequence at the end of Quantumania.

As it happened, the first episode of the season was devoid of any significant movement on the multiverse storyline, or an appearance from Jonathan Majors as Kang outside of scenes reused in the “Previously on” sequence. Whether that will have dampened interest for future episodes of the season will remain to be seen; Loki continues this Thursday at 6pm PST, 9pm EST on Disney+.

One thing that the first episode of Loki season 2 did show, however, might have been the end of time
