In one of his finest magic tracks yet, John Constantine is back — and has reunited the creative team of Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell for a new miniseries bringing the character to the U.S. on a mission featuring some very familiar faces for fans of DC’s iconic Vertigo imprint. Just announced at New York Comic Con 2023 is the launch next year of John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America.

In a statement about the series, Spurrier said, “Hellblazer is back. Between 2019 and 2021, Aaron Campbell and I chronicled John Constantine’s sly progress through London. For 13 issues, the book dripped with heart and hate and rage — rage at the state of the world, rage at the state of our minds and lives. Those 13 issues were our poisonous love letter to the Constantines of the past — [Alan] Moore’s, [Jamie] Delano’s, [Garth] Ennis’s. It was the best work we’ve ever done. And then it stopped. On a note of death and despair, with — like all magic — a heavy price levied. And now it’s back. Because the cost doesn’t count if we don’t get to see it being paid. Because even dead things can make a difference.”

The new eight-issue series follows up on the pair’s earlier John Constantine, Hellblazer series, as Constantine escapes to the United States having seemingly cheated death… although, of course, things are never that simple. It turns out that he might have one friend who can help, however, as Dream himself needs a favor from Constantine… but helping Dream out might require Constantine to ask favors of old friends himself. Friends in, shall we say, swampy places…? (Spoilers: look who's in the background of the cover by Aaron Campbell in the gallery below.)

“When the email came through informing Si and I that we had the greenlight to finish the John Constantine, Hellblazer story we began several years ago, I could hear something, just over my shoulder — a scraping metallic flick. Once, twice, three times a charm. Then a long, deep inhalation. I could almost smell the smoke and hear the words, ‘You really thought I was gone for good, mate?’" added artist Aaron Campbell who’ll be reteaming with color artist Jordie Bellaire on the new series.

John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America will launch January 16, 2024. Collected editions of the team’s previous series are available as John Constantine, Hellblazer Vol. 1: Marks of Woe, and Vol. 2: The Best Version of You.
