DCU's Lobo might look awfully familiar: Aquaman Jason Momoa is in talks for the role

This news comes just months before the release of Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, one of the last entries in the pre-James Gunn DCEU

Just two weeks ago, James Gunn took to Threads to list three actors reprising their pre-DCU roles in the next slate of interconnected DC Comics-based movies (you may recall Popverse's reporting on the announcement). That list holds true, but there might be a new asterisk needed as of today, as official sources report Jason Mamoa is in talks to enter the DCU... just not as Aquaman.

The news comes from Variety in a piece about the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, in theaters this December. Among stories of the film's rocky production, the article casually drops this casting bomb:

"[...]none of the stars cast by Zack Snyder for 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League [...] will reprise their roles in the new DC universe in character. Momoa may return, just not as Aquaman. Sources say the actor has engaged in talks to play Lobo, either in the 2025 reboot Superman: Legacy, written and directed by Gunn, or in a standalone film."

Speculation of Jason Momoa taking on the larger-than-the-multiverse role of anti-hero Lobo have persisted on the internet since before Momoa was cast as Arthur Curry. In fact, a recent DC Comics Halloween Special (Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun, look it up) played on this fancasting, in a sequence that sees Lobo dress up as the King of the Seven Seas for spooky season.

"This is fraggin ridiculous," says the intergalactic bounty hunter, "I look nothing like Aquaman."

Despite rampant guesstimates and some truly inspiring fan art, no official talks about Momoa as Lobo have been confirmed until now. However, we feel the need to remind you that talks are all that have been confirmed. Jason Momoa has not, as of this writing, been officially cast as Lobo and, with the SAG-AFTRA strike ongoing, it is unlikely we'll get casting news anytime soon.

Can't hurt to hope, though, right?

Aquaman is on Max now, and the sequel comes to US theaters December 20.

Speaking of Aquaman, comic essayist Ritesh Babu has a piece on the changes to the character's comic book avatar. Check it out.
