Westeros is a land of conflict. Long before the events of Game of Thrones eventually fractured the Seven Kingdoms, another civil war threatened to tear apart the legendary House Targaryen and their fearsome dragons. House of the Dragon season two is coming this summer to show who eventually came out on top when two potential heirs fight over the Iron Throne.

We’ve known for a while that the new season was coming out this summer, but it wasn’t until HBO dropped their dueling Green and Black trailers that we found out that House of the Dragon season two’s release date is June 16, 2024 at 9pm EST for the first episode and new episodes to follow weekly on Sundays at the same time on HBO and Max. The two trailers set the new season out as a tale of two siblings, both believing that they are their late father’s chosen heir.

Both Aegon and Rhaenyra Targaryen are surrounded by powerful allies, but this is Westeros – how many of those loyalties will last to the end of the season? The two trailers showed off what is expected to be a CGI-heavy season, with massive dragons flying the skies and being suitably fearsome as they burn opposing armies to the ground. While the plot feels like a rehash of the central conflict in Game of Thrones, the presence of dragons on both sides gives it a greater sense of danger and scale. Survival rates tend to be much lower when your enemy could just burn you to a crisp with a single breath.

HBO’s House of the Dragon season two debuts on June 16, 2024 at 9pm EST on HBO and Max.
