DC's original Green Lantern, first Flash, and the Golden Age Sandman all get their own solo books this fall
The New Golden Age expands with three new Justice Society spin-offs
The New Golden Age pop-up imprint at DC is expanding during the 'Dawn of DC,' with the announcement of three all-new miniseries spinning out of the current Justice Society of America comic book series this fall, each spotlighting a different member of the classic super team.
The three new titles, each of which will bear both the New Golden Age and 'Dawn of DC' banners and are overseen by New Golden Age chief Geoff Johns, are:
- Alan Scott: The Green Lantern by Tim Sheridan and Cian Tormey
- Jay Garrick: The Flash by Jeremy Adams and Diego Olortegui
- Wesley Dodds: The Sandman by Robert Venditti and Riley Rossmo
“It’s long past time that the heroes of the Justice Society had their own titles again,” Johns said in a statement. “At the same time, they had to be special, important, and emotional stories, each one exploring character, revealing secrets, and introducing new heroes and villains to the DC Universe.”
Sheridan and Tormey’s Green Lantern series will retell the origins of Alan Scott beginning in the '30s, including the contemporary context of Scott as a closeted gay man in that time period, while Adams and Olortegui’s Flash will follow the story of Jay Garrick’s reunion with his daughter, Judy — a character previously stolen from time that has been part of the recent Stargirl: The Lost Children miniseries. Venditti and Rossmo’s Sandman, by contrast, goes back to the roots of the Golden Age character as a scientist and pacifist trying to find ways to prevent the oncoming Second World War.
“Tim has crafted a beautiful and shocking origin story for Alan’s greatest enemy, the Golden Age Red Lantern, that is both heartbreaking and inspiring,” explained Johns. “Jeremy has created a fun, emotional adventure celebrating the reunion of Jay Garrick with his long lost daughter, Judy, set firmly in the DC Universe of today and Rob will present a mystery tale of The Golden Age Sandman’s earliest days through the lens of Oppenheimer. These three series will all tie back into Justice Society of America and a few other titles we’ve got brewing.”
All three series will launch in October, although Alan Scott: The Green Lantern will get a preview in the upcoming DC Pride: Through the Ages collected edition, due for release June 13; that book will also reprint 1991’s The Flash #53, featuring the Pied Piper coming out of closet, 2009’s Detective Comics #854 featuring the first solo story of the modern Boatwoman, and 2018’s Supergirl #19, which introduced Lee Serano to the DCU. The New Golden Age is the branding announced last year for Johns’ new line of titles centering around the classic Justice Society of America characters, although at time of its announcement, it was revealed that other DC characters such as the Legion of Super-Heroes and Johns’ own Doomsday Clock characters Mime and Marionette would be attached to the unofficial imprint. These three new series will be the first New Golden Age titles not written directly by Johns himself.

Last year, Johns talked to Popverse about his plans for the initial New Golden Age books.
