If you were wondering just how to celebrate Godzilla Day this year, perhaps you should take a leaf out of Toho’s book. The studio, which has owned the Godzilla franchise since its creation in 1954, marked the occasion with the surprise announcement of an all-new Godzilla movie, slated to come out exactly one year from now.

Very little is known about the new movie, outside of its release date and the fact that it’ll be directed by Takashi Yamasaki (Lupin III: The First); all that Toho has shared is an admittedly eye-catching logo for the untitled feature.

When it arrives, the movie will be the 30th live action installment in the long-running franchise, and the first since 2016’s Shin Godzilla. In the interim, the character has appeared in two English language movies as the anchor for Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse: 2019’s Godzilla: King of Monsters — a sequel to 2014’s reboot Godzilla — and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. A sequel to that last movie is currently in the works for a 2024 release.

Godzilla first appeared in a 1954 movie of the same name, which was immediately followed the next year by a sequel titled Godzilla Raids Again. The franchise has periodically gone quiet as a movie property, only to be relaunched quickly — in 1984, 1999, and 2016, respectively — even as the character has appeared in other media, including animated television, comic books, and video games.
