A Ghostbusters animated movie has been stuck in production for years

The Ghostbusters franchise is one that simply refuses to stay down. Despite decades passing between theatrical releases, Sony has since developed an entire slate of movies for the series, making it one of their major franchises in the coming years. However, their plans extend beyond just the live-action films like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – there is a new Ghostbusters film in production that gives a new twist on the series’ formula.
It was first announced in 2015 by the director of the original Ghostbusters movies, Ivan Reitman. Reitman would be stepping in as producer of a new animated film from Sony Pictures Animation. However, instead of following a group of paranormal investigators trying to save New York City from ghostly intruders, this film would instead be told from the point of view of the ghosts.
It is a really interesting concept and it is a shame we’ve not heard much about it since then. Production was meant to begin after 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife became a box office hit, but there still hasn’t been a release date announced or even a title for it. The last update we had on the film was back in June 2022, when it was announced that Jennifer Kluska (Hotel Transylvania: Transformania) and Chris Prynoski (Beavis and Butt-Head Do America) would be directing the film based on a script by Brenda Hsueh (Elemental, The Afterparty).
Since then, there hasn't been much movement on this potential shakeup of the Ghostbusters formula, although a late 2022 story confirmed that it was still in the works. It's a shame because it sounds like it could be the first Ghostbusters movie in decades that wasn’t banking on pure nostalgia to get people to the cinema.
