Yes, there's a mid-credit scene in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
No, it's not setting up a sequel
There are a number of ways that the influence of Marvel Studios can be felt in Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: the mixture of action and comedy — and the particular brand of self-aware comedy, particularly — and two separate callouts to the iconic Avengers-in-the-round shot, most notably… but the movie also follows Marvel’s lead with the inclusion of that all-important modern movie staple: a mid-credit scene. Does that mean we should be expecting the slow build of a D&D Cinematic Universe…? (Spoilers below.)
Honor Among Thieves certainly lays out plenty of threads for potential sequels and spin-offs throughout the main movie — surely I’m not the only one who wants to know a lot more about the Emerald Enclave. What about the fact that the Red Wizards of Thay still have an army of the dead out there? So it comes as a welcome relief that the movie’s mid-credit sequence is less concerned with building out a successful franchise than it is reminding people of an earlier joke, cutting back to one of the revived corpses from the movie’s cemetery scene who’s been accidentally left alive after being asked only four of the five questions necessary to return him to the dead.
For those reading this story who haven’t seen the movie — didn’t you see the spoiler mention above? — the corpse has been returned to life temporarily thanks to one of Simon’s spells, which brings the dead back to life for exactly five questions… or, precisely, five answers, as Edgin and the crew discover to their dismay.
Thankfully, this particular awakened undead is not a ravenous zombie type. Instead, he just seems slightly upset and worried about his current predicament, asking the audience to ask him a question. (In the screening I was in, someone in the audience obliged, yelling “Did you like the movie?” I can only hope this is happening in screenings across the world.)
Whether or not Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves gets a sequel remains unknown, but we do know that it’s going to get a TV series on Paramount+. Maybe our undead friend will show up there… at least until someone asks him the time of day.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is in theaters now. Buy tickets on Fandango or Atom Tickets.
Never mind the movie; how do you even play Dungeons & Dragons? We have the answer.
