Boom! Studios bends reality and cartoons with new series Uncanny Valley
Creators Tony Fleecs and Dave Wachter promise a "big huge story... centered on this tiny little family"
Get ready for an origin story unlike any other, as creators Tony Fleecs (Stray Dogs) and Dave Wachter (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) team up to introduce Oliver, a 12-year-old who can do things other kids can’t — and who wants to know just why his family history is quite as mysterious as it is… and whether or not that’s related to the weird crows that can’t seem to leave him alone. Sound spooky and unusual? We prefer “uncanny”… as in, Uncanny Valley, the new series from Boom! Studios launching this April.
“Who Framed Roger Rabbit by way of Something Epic is a good starting point to describing this insane story Tony and Dave have built,” Boom! editor Jon Moisan teased about the new title. “It’s full of heart, hilarity, and cartoon violence. What’s not to love?” Given the title of the series and the Roger Rabbit reference, it’s beginning to look as if there’s something cartoonish going on… but the book’s creators aren’t giving anything away just yet.
All Fleecs will reveal in a statement is that Uncanny Valley is “a book that I've wanted to make for years. I'm so excited to be making it with the impossibly talented Dave Wachter and with Boom! Studios,” adding that the series is “a big huge story set in two giant worlds with all sorts of magic and mystery and robots and skeletons but it's centered on this little tiny family. Those are my favorite kinds of stories.”
“It’s awesome how things work out sometimes. Tony Fleecs is one of my favorite people and favorite writers, too,” added artist Dave Wachter. “When he told me about this idea for a story years ago, I thought ‘That’s a great idea!’ Now we get to make it, along with BOOM! Studios, who puts out some of the best looking books anywhere. With Uncanny Valley, I’m stretching into new territory and having a blast at the same time.”
Readers will get to find out what’s behind the mystery for themselves with the first issue of Uncanny Valley hits stands April 10, with covers from Wachter and Fleecs, as well as Brett Bean, and Dan Mora. Check out the first three of those four covers as well as a sneak preview of the interior art below for some further hints of the reality-bending hijinks to come.
