Black Clover’s anime may have come to an end before it reached the end of the manga’s material, but there are still 170 episodes to dive into. It follows Asta and Yuno, who have grown up together after being abandoned at the steps of a church. Yuno shows excellent magical abilities, while Yuno only seems capable of using anti-magic to nullify the spells of others. In classic Shonen anime fashion, their rivalry quickly propels them both into an adventure beyond their initial expectations.
For fans of Asta and Yuno’s journey to become the next Wizard King, it can be tough to know how best to tackle the show and the multiple OVAs that have been released. There are a few different ways to watch the show, each with its own merits. Most often, fans are encouraged to watch Black Clover in either chronological or release order. If you’re wondering which one is best, here is our guide to both.
How to watch Black Clover in chronological order
Watching Black Clover in chronological order is fairly easy since most of the episodes take place in the same order they were released. The first OVA is produced by a different studio and covers events from episodes 1-2 and 17, which makes placing it on the timeline somewhat tricky. The second OVA, released in 2018, is a pure filler episode that doesn’t have any impact on the main story. We’ve slotted both into the below order, but you can easily skip them if you want to avoid filler.
- Black Clover Episodes 1-17
- Black Clover Jump Festa 2016 OVA – Note that this OVA was released by a different studio before the anime came out and covers material from episodes 1,2, and 17.
- Black Clover Episodes 18-59
- Black Clover Jump Festa 2018 OVA – Note that this is a comedy episode where the characters take part in a game show about the show. It is very funny but largely non-canon.
- Black Clover Episodes 60-101
- Mugyutto! Black Clover – Note that this is a web animation series of 8 short episodes that take place in a totally different art style and with characters that act completely different from the main show. It is considered an Alternate Universe story that doesn’t fit into the main timeline.
- Black Clover Episodes 102-170
- Squishy! Black Clover
Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King
How to watch Black Clover in release order
The Black Clover anime ran from 2017 to 2021, releasing 170 episodes on a nearly weekly basis. These episodes are the only animation that is considered canon to the story; the two OVAs and Mugyutto! spin-off series either recap episodes or take place in a completely different timeline so you don’t need to watch them to get the overall story of the show.
- Black Clover Jump Festa 2016 OVA – Note that this OVA was released by a different studio before the anime came out and covers material from episodes 1,2, and 17.
- Black Clover Episodes 1-11
- Black Clover Jump Festa 2018 OVA – Note that this is a comedy episode where the characters take part in a game show about the show. It is very funny but largely non-canon.

Where can you stream Black Clover?
If you want to watch every episode of Black Clover all in one place, it's almost easy. All 170 episodes plus the 8-episode Mugyutto! Black Clover spin-off are available on Crunchyroll.
What about the two OVAs? They’re a bit tougher to get in the West. Neither has had a wide release outside of Japan, though you can find clips of both on YouTube with a bit of searching.
The movie Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King is the easiest to find - it's on Netflix.
Which episodes of Black Clover are filler?
As Black Clover aired, it became more reliant on filler to prevent it from overtaking the manga’s plot. By the end of its original run in 2021, around 10% of the overall episode count could be considered filler, meaning that they cover events and stories not adapted from the original manga. The full list of Black Clover filler episodes is:
- Episode 29
- Episode 66
- Episode 68
- Episode 82
- Episodes 123-125
- Episode 131
- Episodes 134-135
- Episodes 142-148
Why was Black Clover canceled?
Unfortunately, the Black Clover anime ended in March 2021, because the show was continually in danger of catching up to the source material. As the show progressed, it was relying more heavily on filler to slow down the plot. As a result, the studio decided to stop producing the anime to let the manga release more chapters.
The good news is that it is likely the Black Clover anime will continue in the future, provided that the manga continues to sell well and demand remains high. The biggest change is that show will probably start airing in a seasonal format rather than continue as it did in the past to avoid running into this problem in the future.
