BioShock: Writers are back to work on Netflix adaptation

The journey toward a live-action Rapture is back on, according to writer Michael Green

Big Daddies and Little Sisters rejoice, the Netflix BioShock movie is back on track.

First announced by the streaming platform in August of 2022, the BioShock movie will take place in Rapture, the underwater dystopia introduced in the massively popular game franchise of the same name. The film will be directed by Francis Lawrence of Hunger Games fame and written by Blade Runner 2049 scribe Michael Green.

Recently, Green sat down with Collider to give a quick update on the film's progress, after the recent end of the WGA strike. Apparently, the film (or at least, its script) is back on track, now that writers can go back work.

"Netflix has been amazing about it," said Green. "They were excited about it before the strike, they're excited about it now, post-strike. Yes, I got called, the, 'How's it coming along?' the minute the strike was over, 'You about ready…?' Been meeting regularly with Francis Lawrence and his team to refine a draft to go back in. We're all optimistic. We all love it. It's a great big sprawling nightmare world we wanna see real."

A "great big sprawling nightmare world" captures the spirit of the games pretty well, don't you think? Unfortunately, we're going to leave the news at "spirit" right now - though Green is obviously excited about the project, there seems to be little more he can say.

"You have to measure your words," he jokes, "or you'll start to see a laser pointer at my forehead from the Netflix legal."

Still, Green ended his comments by saying that he "would love to have an update for you soon." Hopefully, those updates will include cast members, a plot synopsis, or at the very least a release date. As of this writing, all of those details about the BioShock film are unknown.

Speaking of Netflix live-action adaptations, did you know the pirate ships on One Piece were receycled?

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy pairing of the two. He has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama, despite their better judgement. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kelsey, and corgi, Legs.
