The title The Brave and the Bold has a long, significant history for DC. The original comic of that name introduced the world to the original Suicide Squad, the Justice League of America, the Teen Titans, and the Silver Age version of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, before becoming a Batman team-up comic that’s fondly remembered five decades later. It’s also the title of one of the greatest animated series of all time… as well as the title of the next DCU Batman movie. And, later this year, it’ll return to comic book shelves as a new anthology title showcasing the biggest and best in the DC Universe.

Launching in May, Batman: The Brave and The Bold will be an anthology title running 64 pages per issue, featuring four stories every month featuring characters from all across the DCU — basically, think of what DC was doing with the Batman: Urban Legends title, but expanding beyond the confines of Gotham City. The initial line-up of stories features a new series of Batman: Black and White shorts by creators including Dan Mora and Joelle Jones, a new StormWatch series by Ed Brisson and Jeff Spokes spinning out of last year’s Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special, a Superman-centric mystery serial titled “Order of the Black Lamp” by Christopher Cantwell and Javier Rodriguez, and what might be the big ticket item: a four-part retelling of the first meeting of Batman and the Joker by the all-star creative team of Tom King and Mitch Gerads.

As the title suggests, Batman will remain a focus of the series throughout its run, but as the inclusion of StormWatch and Superman serials show, fans should expect any and every area of the DCU to be included in stories appearing in the new Brave and the Bold. Serials will run different lengths, allowing for multiple jumping-on points for new readers. (Black Lamp lasts three issues, the King/Gerads Joker story four, while each Batman: Black and White is a one-and-done.)
