Barry Windsor-Smith home and recovering after stroke and eight days in ICU
News of Windsor-Smith's hospital stay was shared on the artist's Facebook page
Acclaimed comics artist Barry Windsor-Smith (Monsters, Conan, Weapon X) has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home after an Ischemic stroke which led to eight days in an intensive care unit and weeks in rehabilitiation.
On June 10, the artist's Facebook page shared the news about the artist's health in a text post that read, "On May 20, 5 days before his 73rd birthday, Barry Windsor-Smith, author of WEAPON X and MONSTERS, suffered an Ischemic Stroke. He spent 8 days in an ICU and some weeks in rehabilitation. He has been released from the hospital and is slowly recovering at his home in NY."
Barry Windsor-Smith first rose to prominence in the comics field with his work on Marvel Comics in the '70s and '80s , most notably Marvel's adaptation of Conan the Barbarian and Weapon X. In the early 90's Windsor-Smith became creative director and head artist at Valiant Comics, where Windsor-Smith served as chief designer of the Unity crossover series and served as writer and artist on the Archer and Armstrong series. Windsor-Smith left the company only a few years later, and worked in comics as well as fine art for the next few decades.
In 2021, Windsor-Smith released Monsters, published by Fantagraphics, his first book in 16 years. Monsters earned Windsor-Smith three Eisner Awards for Best Graphic Album, Best Artist/Writer, and Best Lettering.
