The horror never dies: here's how you can watch Anne Rice's Immortal Universe on AMC

AMC is only a couple seasons into its connected Anne Rice universe. Here's how you can watch it, and what you can expect next

It's impossible to state just how influencial Anne Rice is on the horror genre. Long before Twilight, Rice made vampires sexier than they ever had been, and the world she created continues to influence movies and television. Case in point; the Immortal Universe.

The Immortal Universe is the name of the interconnected world of TV shows produced by AMC and based on the works of Anne Rice. With spooky season officially begun, it's the perfect time to dip your fangs into the TV version of Rice's lore, and Popverse is here to tell you how. Let's begin our Immortal Universe Watch Order by going through the shows as they came out, in other words...

How to watch the Anne Rice TV shows in release order

The Immortal Universe consists of two shows at the moment. The first, Interview with the Vampire, tells the story of vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac as he navigates an American century and a relationship with centuries-old vampire Lestat. The second show, Mayfair Witches, follows Dr. Rowan Fielding, a modern-day neurosurgeon who learns that she is the heir to a dynasty of powerful magic users.

Both series are only a season deep into the story, with Season One of Interview with the Vampire having come out in 2022 and Season One of Mayfair Witches out in 2023. To view them in that order, simply watch them like this:

If you do that, you'll notice that both series cover a wide swath of history. The Immortal Universe is as big and long-lasting as its name implies, and the historical elements of both shows prove it. If it's the historical elements that attracted you to these shows, you may be wonderingwhat it would look like to rearrange them in perfect chronological order. Well, wonder no further, here's:

Thankfully, everything that happens in the Immortal Universe is part of the same history, so you're not going to get contradicting events (if contradiction is your thing, check out our Halloween watch order). Still, there's a lot of jumping around that these shows do, so get ready to take notes. For convenience sake, we've arranged them by year the scene takes place, episode title, and then timestamp of when the scene can be found in the episode. Here's the Immortal Universe, arranged chronologically:

  • (1681): Mayfair Witches Season One, Episode Two, Scene 0:00
  • (1681): Mayfair Witches Season One, Episode Three, Scene 0:00
  • (1681): Mayfair Witches Season One, Episode Four, Scene 0:00

Like the life of a vampire, or the family history of a sect of witches, the history of the Immortal Universe can be a bit overwhelming (and this is just the first two parts!). Luckily, though the "when" of your Anne Rice bingeathon might have you scratching your head, the "where" of it all is a lot easier to process. Let's talk about:

Where can I watch the Immortal Universe?

It probably won't surprise you to learn that AMC's Immortal Universe is streaming... on AMC+. What might surprise you, however, is that you can also stream both shows, in their entirety, on the Roku Channel (if you have a Roku, that is). And if you're a Max subscriber, you'll be happy to learn that Interview with a Vampire, Season One, just landed on that platform.

Unfortunately for the spooky nerd in all of us, there really isn't that much Immortal Universe out there right now. Once you've chosen your streaming service, there are only 15 episodes to get through before you've reached the end of what's available. It's at this point you'll probably be asking what else you can watch. And while we'll get to more Immortal Universe TV in a moment, let's take a second to talk about some other Anne Rice projects.

Is the Immortal Universe connected to any Anne Rice movies?

There are currently four movies based on Anne Rice's books, listed here:

  • Interview with the Vampire (1994)
  • Exit to Eden (1994)
  • Queen of the Damned (2002)
  • The Young Messiah (2016)

While all of these books share the fact that they are adaptations of Rice's work, and two of them (Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned) come from Rice's Vampire Chronicles, none of them take place within the Immortal Universe. In fact, the Immortal Universe is only possible because Rice's work is no longer on the big screen.

In 2014, Universal Pictures acquired the big screen rights to Rice's vampire novels, intending to build a film franchise out of them. In 2016, however, Universal chose not to renew the rights, returning them to RIce herself. It was at that time that she and her son Christopher began developing the project that would eventually be the Immortal Universe.

Though Rice herself did not live to see either of the series, the work she started in 2016 lead to the two shows on this watch list... and beyond. Which brings us to a queestion you'vee probably been wondering for a while:

Will there be more Immortal Universe?

Great news, horror hounds, the Immortal Universe isn't dying anytime soon. Before Interview with the Vampire had even premiered its first season, AMC renewed it for a second. Mayfair Witches, too, got an order for a season two, announced by AMC itself, and in January 2023, Deadline announced that a crossover between the two shows was in the works. And though we don't have exact premiere dates for either of the second seasons, we did get an unexpected bit of good news about one of them.

As of this writing, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strikes are still ongoing, previously delaying the filming of the second season of Interview with the Vampire. However, AMC recently decided to fast-forward that delay, coming to an agreement with SAG that meant its shows could keep filming. Among them is part two of our beloved ballad of bloodsuckers. And while that update didn't include a release date for either Interview with the Vampire or Mayfield Witches Seasons Two, it does mean we'll be seeing them sooner than expected.

Even more exciting than that, though, is that very soon, those two shows won't be the only Immortal Universe entries.

In April of 2023, AMC announced a short spinoff of Interview with the Vampire and, by extension, a new entry into the Immortal Universe. A digital exclusive, Night Island will consist of six 10-15 minute episodes. It follows a pair of burglars as they attempt to rob the vampire-run resort mentioned in the first season of the show. Night Island is set to be streaming across all AMC online platforms sometime in late 2023.

And come on, you can't expect something called an "Immortal Universe" to stop there, can you? Reported on by Variety, AMC is developing yet another entry into its dark universe, with the monster-hunting drama Talamasca. As anyone who's read Anne Rice's books knows, the Talamasca is a kind of X-Files organization, a secretive body that studies the supernatural and protects humanity from it. John Lee Hancock, responsible for the Netflix horror film Mr. Harrigan's Phone, will serve as showrunner.

That's all we know about the future of the Immortal Universe for now. But if you're still thirsty for more, don't worry: like the creatures she created, the works of Anne Rice will live a long, long time.
