Amazon Prime's summer new hit show may mean we'll see more YA on the streamer
The Summer I Turned Pretty has unlocked a key demographic for Prime Video
There seems to be no sating audiences' appetite for sweet summer romance. At least, that's what Prime Video's recent success the television adapation of YA author Jenny Han's The Summer I Turned Pretty implies. Not only has the second season of the series become the streamer's second most-viewed series to date with women 18-34 (following Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power), it has also driven subscriber growth, according to an Amazon report shared with Deadline.
This should not come as a surprise, considering the major breakout success of the adaptation of Han's other well-known work, To All the Boys I Loved Before, which, according to Netflix, was one of their most viewed original films ever. The success of the movie later spawned two sequels and a spinoff show titled XO Kitty.
Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon and MGM Studios, recently shared with Deadline that he expects The Summer I Turned Pretty to "continue to be a huge centerpiece for us," promising a "great vision" from Han, as well as Prime Video's development on "complementary pieces." And that's not all, the success of the show across multiple age groups may mean that more YA will come to the streamer. Sanders shared with Deadline that, "We’re really trying to make sure that there’s generations that see themselves portrayed. Kelly Day [VP of Prime Video] is a huge fan of YA content and she always said, ‘If you make a great YA show, people of all ages come.’ And I think she was really right about that."
Prime Video's Red White and Royal Blue adaptation is not nearly as bad as its trailer.
